I am playing Sweden and had the Hanseatic League as a vassal. After ten years, the 'Annex' option came up and I clicked it to acquire that territory.
My relationship was at +200.
The League rejected my offer, but then cancelled the vassalization as well! The relationship is now at +100 but I don't have a temporary CB against them.
Am I out of luck?

In my own current GC as Russia, three times I had a relationship with vassalized Pskov at +200 and attempted to annex. Each time they rejected the offer, cancelled the vassalization and our relations dropped by 100 points. After that, I invaded. Screw stability.

BTW, the 'Offer Royal Marriage' option was always grayed out with them. Does anyone know if a Royal Marriage can't be made with a vassal? It's probably in the rules or one of the faqs, I know; should probably look it up, as that may have had a bearing on why they kept rejecting annexation.... :(

Just out of curiosity - does anyone know why you seem to get a lot of revolts in dip-annexed countries? It just seems that if they came into the fold peacefully there wouldn;t be many revolts, or they should be small. But mostly I see large scale frequent revolts - and my stability is +3 and same religion. Any thoughts?

Nationality revolts. there appears to be no distinction internally between peaceful and military annexation.

re Pskov. In many games i find Pskov is or goes Catholic, you cannot get RMs with those that
do not share your faith.. still cant figure out why catholics cant marry counter-reform catholics... )

Isn't Pskov Orthodox ? Orthodox countries can't convert ... And Orthodox countries can get RM with any form of catholicism. I have never had trouble marrying CR catholics and catholics, or diplo annexing that way.

What version are u playing ??

oh yeah, I added that about the religion just because I forgot. It just seems ridiculous to me that a few years after peacefully joining my budding empire, I should be getting revolts.

Jehangir:

Waiting longer than 10 years is the key; also having a monarch who's a talented diplomat helps. I have managed to diplo-annex both Parma and Milan as Portugal recently, and I waited roughly 15 years to offer annexation to each.
Quick question for the board - how long do nationalistic revolts last? I still get occassional revolts for Morocco in the 1700s; this is a country I conquered in the early 1500s.....

Thanks,

Paul

Playing as Austria, I annexed Bavaria.

My experience with that is that it's easier to annex when they are militarily weak. I attempted to annex with them having around 80 army units and they reject my offer undoubtedly. Then after waiting a few years and going through battles (them as my ally), their army all gone, they easily accepted my political annexation. (If we apply this to the real life situation, of course they have no better choice, unless they want the Austrian army to march in their cities. If they accept the political way, their nobility will still retain it's status.) I don't know if the EU engines takes into account, the army size. Just thought I'd share my experience....

;)

BiB:

It could have been war tiredness. I wound up sending missionaries to all of the Moroccan provinces, and converting them. The nationalism numbers are great information, and quite useful. I guess I can start expecting revolts in Milan, now (another diplo-annex situation...). Crap, dealing with Parma as Portugal was bad enough.....

Thanks Again,

Paul

And having a bigger army obviously helps "convincing" vassals.

I have also found that it helps if your vassal doesn't have great relations with another country. I can't remember which minor I tried to diplo-annex, but I had all the requisites: BIgger country, much bigger military, higher stability, more money, 15 years as a vassal and +200 relations. NO go. I noticed he had +200 relations with another country, so I waited 10 years and in between had a war with that other country. My vassals relations dropped with that other country and eventually I was able to diplo annex.
