Cannot activate on multiple computers?

I just got a new laptop and wanted to finally be able to play eic smoothly but was disappointed when at the activation screen I was told that my code was already in use. Maybe it's not this way with every game but I thought that you could use a key on up to three computers?

Will I have to buy the game all over again?
