Can't pick our empire when we try loading a multiplayer save file

A friend and I tried playing a multiplayer game of stellaris, everything worked well, but the next time when we tried to load our last save file and had to pick our empire they didn't show up.
We tried it again with new games, once I was hosting and once he was the host, sometimes one could pick them but not the other, sometimes we I only had 3 of the empires to choose from (we had 10 in our game). So we basically already tried different methods.
A little bit more about our games: only one of us has a couple Dlcs, the other person has none and when we started the game we both picked random for our empire.

I don't think I'll be able to help with this, but I believe there have been other such reports occasionally. So far as I recall the only way to rescue that save it to manually edit the save game file to make the empire visible again.

You might check the MP and Bug Report forums for other such reports.

I also found some reports on this on other forums and even a youtube video about this problem, but they either have no solution or it didn't really work for me. I don't really care about the save file I just wanna know how I can prevent it in the future.

I'm not across bug reports for this game, but my impression it is is a very sporadic issue and the devs have not been able to reproduce it. So the short answer is that (so far as I know) we don't know why it happens!

If you are using any mods, try without I guess.
