I hope I'm in the right subforum here, I wasn't exactely sure whether it belonged here.

I didn't install a patch for EU2 for a very long time, I'm still running v1.04. Reading the stickies here, I realized a lot as changed since, including some grafics changes (flags etc.). Will installing the newest version (v1.08) affect my save files? If they will (undoubtedly they will), in what way?

Thx in advance

It is always recommended to start a new game with each new patch.

Some can be played with no problems at all. Others will not play at all.
To be honest I do not remember if one of the patches between 1.05 and 1.08 caused a crash but there have been lots of changes so I think it a high posibility.

One more specific question: Will the flags and tags change in the old save files? I guess they will, but I hope they won't, since that will definately end the AAR I was trying to write (suddenly every country has an other flag...).

So you would advice me to play the files, that I want to continue, to the end and just then install the patch?

Yes.

New graphics would affect the ongoing game (its appearance, probably not its stability). Historical leaders and monarchs are in the savegame so changes to those files won't affect the existing game. I don't think any country names were changed but if they were that would affect it. You might consider copying your existing install folder so you can still play that copy after upgrading the original. e.g. copy "Europa Universalis 2" to "EU2 1.04".

Just finish your current game with 1.04, then patch, nothing wrong with 1.04 I played many a game with that patch. :)
