Hi, folks, I'm looking for a bit of advice (or I have to learn to swear in another language, because ever since I got my new pc back in September, I'm struggling to get CK2 to run properly. Sometimes it will run for hours and be fine, other times it'll run for five minutes. I keep getting that annoying 'display driver amdkmdap stopped responding' error, and have uninstalled and reinstalled my AMD drivers numerous times (card is an AMD RX 560), I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game as well, and I thought I'd narrowed it down to a dodgy mod, but it's also happening when I have no mods installed. The game isn't putting a full load on the GPU or the CPU, and I turn off my Anti-Virus when I play. Can anyone offer any advice on what to try next? I can play other games (No Man's Sky, PUBG, etc) without issues, but something is not playing nice with CK2.

If it's not the driver then that is almost certainly a hardware problem with your video card, I'm afraid.

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Thanks for replying, AndrewT!

Idle temps were: CPU - 29 celsius, GPU 31 C, and, after playing CK2 for ten minutes (when it crashed), temps were: CPU - 30 celsius, and the GPU hovered between 47 and 50 celsius. I got a new error in the log, too: [gfx_dx9.cpp:890]: GfxReset failed with error: D3DERR_INVALIDCALL: Invalid call which, I'm assuming is the game telling me it was unable to recover after the crash. Could a mod, if it forces a few extra calculations, cause this? I'm noticing something, but not sure what it is yet.

Quick Edit: I removed one mod, and my Anti-Virus has stayed off, GPU temps are staying stable on 48 C. I've started wars, run full speed, and zoomed in and out constantly, and I can't replicate the crash. Even Alt-Tabbing is not killing it. That can't be the solution, can it?

Your temperatures are fine, I get worried when they approach 80c.

I cannot see how a mod could cause this error, which as I say is a driver or hardware one. I guess there could conceivably be a badly-done or corrupt image in the mod that trips off a problem in the driver, something odd like that.

I'm baffled. I've run three different games at the same time as CK2, with the game on full speed (in other words, everything I can think of to give my GPU a heart attack) and it's fine. Game is smooth as butter and as stable as, and I've also realized that the crashes I got on the old PC, the same mod was installed. I don't get it. Eh, give me back Windows 3.11 and DOS 6.2, I understood how those worked. I'll put it down to a quirk, and not look a gift horse in the mouth here, I think.

Thanks so much for your help, AndrewT!
