As Russia in the late 1500s, I have discovered Indochina. The three potential colonies there have really low suitability (like 14%) for either trading or colonies, and extremely aggressive natives. On the other hand at least two of them produce Chinaware, which is of course very valuable.

Is there any way to increase the suitability of a province for colonization (e.g. park some troops on top of it)? Does suitability naturally increase over time? Right now the cost/benefit ratio doesn't look too good. I'd have to pour thousands of ducats into creating colonies, and the damn natives would probably slaughter my colonists at the first opportunity.

Is suitability different for different countries? For example, will the Dutch find it easier to colonize these provinces for some reason?

Zhukov:

Conquistadors definitely increase a colony's success chances; you may also want to initially put up a trading post, as well. In areas with a high, hostile native population, you may want to leave a high quantity of troops to deal with any "unrest". These areas (SE Asia) can be colonized successfully, and are great additions to your tax base...

Good Luck!

From what I've recently learned on this board suitability does follow historical colonization. It will be easier for England to colonize Manhatten than it would be for Crimea for example.

When I played Russia I painstakingly put up trading posts when the percentage was above 60% and left the natives if they were somewhat docile. Also, a conquistador will help with a colony, but not a trading post I think. If the percentages are 20/14% or something close I wiped out the natives so I could get to the chinaware and ivory and spices. I didn't end up with many colonies that incorporated the natives so if I were to do it again I'd exterminate and use a conquistador to get colonies on harbor provinces and TPs on the rest.

Woodelf:

Try to hang onto the native population if possible; IMHO, this can be a big help down the road when other countries attempt to "acquire" your prize possessions.....
Granted, it's a bear to get started, but an incredible asset to have down the road.....

Ciao!

A conquistador helps. 3 times his manouver rating gets added to the succes rate. Having a TP there first also adds 5 percent. Every new establishment also adds a 5% chance.

Ah! Hard numbers. Very Good. BTW, is there any way of telling whether a potential colony will have a negative growth rate or not? Or is this determined merely by the Geography? In other words, certain types of provinces within certain termperature zones will always have a negative growth rate?

SInce success is determined by conditions when the colonist is placed, I assume you don't want to start a colony in Hudson Bay or Siberia in the dead of winter even though the colonists may actually arrive in the summer?

You really should take a look at my FAQ ... ;)

Have I said, take a look at my FAQ ?

AFAIK winter is not a factor.

Which doesn't necessarily make sense. You should be able to move troops into a province and prevent colonization by another nation even if the colonists have been sent already.

Hehe, the funny thing is that if someone has a conquistador in a province, EVERYONE gets a +% and reduced cost to colonize ... =)

colonial population growth

Does anybody know if it is possible to determine the
population growth rate of colonies in advance?
(ie before the first is set up)
Or are the values constant with respect to world area code ?

There are various constants in certain areas.

Otherwise it's = +5% - colonization difficulty.

This can be calculated from the % chance to colonize (look in my FAQ) or can be looked up in province.csv or in the province webpage at my site.

I have pulled that stunt so many times on my enemies. I watch for..well heck..any troops of another country , and send of a trader ASAP. If I am successful the enemy army usually disbands the unit right away. HA! I posess a new provinces , AND I eliminated a regiment..WOOHOO :)
