I am looking for some help here. I just Bought EU 2 days ago and it has been nothing but problems since I bought it. It has the following problems.

1) When I try to exit the game, hard freeze.
2) If I end task the game instead of exiting, same problem.
3) Some times a event pops up very breifly and then the game crash's and I am on my desk top.

I am running the latest North American patch 1.10, win98 SE computer with latest Microsoft Updates, and the rest of my hardware drivers have been updated to within the past 6 months. I am running latest version of direct X and I have no TSR running in background out side of explorer and systray. Have already done a remove and reinstall. Any thoughts?

The games RT aspect in a big enough pain by itself if the game is not stable to boot I am going to just return it. I brought the game because I am interested in getting EU2 and HOI. My understanding was that those games and EU used the same engine so I figured I would get a glimps of what they might look like out of the bargin bin. Having a game with these types of crashing issues on patch number 10 is not a good sign.

This question is in the wrong forum... somebody will probably be along shortly and move it to the right one.:)
Don't know the answer to your questions, sorry.

Hm, I ran a similar system with my EU1, and patch 1.10 was very stable for me. :(

Sorry, but I can't help u, maybe the blokes in the Support can...

And now we're open for business again. :D

Unfortunately I'm just on my way out of the office and won't be home until very late so I'll try to help you in the morning if one of the other friendly support types haven't already done so. Sorry about that. :(

Ok... Some people have a problem I think... I Bought Europa Universalis 1!

The only reason I think this problem happened is because of this line, "I just Bought EU 2 days ago". So let me re do it. I bought Europa Universalis version 1, two days ago.

So I have no idea what good putting my post in the EU2 support form will be.

Read your first post again - you said "I just Bought EU 2 days ago" which we naturally read as "I just Bought EU2, days ago, ..." whereas I guess you meant "I just Bought EU, 2 days ago, ..." :)

Also people did not read on to the rest of my post which had things like this. "running the latest North American patch 1.10" and Bargin bin. EU2 does not have have a version 10 patch and EU is still being sold at over $20, so I figured people could figure out what I was talking about.

At this rate I am just going to return the game I think. I am sick of it crashing my computer.

Michael

I am now at home. I am sorry that I couldn't stay late at the office to offer you immediate help....

BUT contrary to your comment, I did actually read your post and did realise that we are talking about EU1 - as you say, the v1.10 is a dead giveaway that we're not talking about EU2. As it happens, the EU1 and EU2 support forums were rolled together so this one forum actually supports all versions of EU.

It's late, I'm tired....and since it's a little after 1:00AM right now, I'm going to ask you a couple questions and make one or two suggestions and then when I get up in the morning I'll see if you've had a chance to address them.

Most likely cause: Are you running nVidia drivers below v40.xx (released a little less than 6 months ago so you'll note that yes, I did read your post)?

Have you tried turning off your hardware acceleration in DirectX?

How much RAM do you have?

How much video RAM do you have?

When you did the reinstall, did you patch using the same file you downloaded before or did you download it again in case any packets were lost in the first download?

Do you have any abnormal issues with any other games (or programs) that you are running on this system?

That's it for now. I'll check for your answers in about 7 hours when I get into the office.

Gawd but this is a old one.
When you hit the button to "surrender" (the only way out) and it drops to Desktop then do not hit any more keys - go and make a cup of coffee or something. On some machines it takes time for it to end all the ingame tasks. Hitting any key or mouse buttons during this time will mess things up and cause a hard freeze.
This was never really solved for this game but isnt present in EU2 (A far better and more stable game) or HOI.

I am running a nVidia video card, GeForce DDR, v28.35. I will try the latest driver from nVidia, v41.09.

Have you tried turning off your hardware acceleration in DirectX?

On or off had no effect.

How much RAM do you have?

256 MB, 950 AMD Duron

How much video RAM do you have?

32 MB, in my bios I have allocated 32 MB of my RAM to the video bus.

When you did the reinstall, did you patch using the same file you downloaded before or did you download it again in case any packets were lost in the first download?

I deleted the directory and downloaded a new copy of the patch.

None at this time, I did try to go to a nVidia driver version 33.xx when that first came out, however UT 1 had some very wierd problems with it. Game would crash or the display would got to something like 16 color and I would have to reboot to fix it. I restored my older drivers and problem went away. No other problems with any other games, UT2003, Diablo II and Red Faction all work fine with my current driver set.

Thanks for the help.

Michael

PS Sorry for my short comments, I am tired and very frustrated. I will what the driver update does. Hopefully it will not effect UT1, ;)

I installed the latest drivers my nvidia card and the crush on exit problem has not be resolved. SIGH, oh well any other idea's?

Also let me clear this up, its not when I hit the surrender problem its when I hit exit from the game menu. The computer locks up right at that point, some times it goes to the desktop, in either case the PC is locked. I got the crash to desktop twice with the older video drivers on a event poping up.

Michael

Michael,

No problem. We all have our good and bad days. :)

Your system seems perfectly adequate for that game (I was hoping that you had low OS RAM and I could blame it on Windows virtual memory :D). The nVidia drivers before the 40.xx definitely had problems so I think the 40.xx series driver will solve most of your in game crash problems whereas the 33.xx series were complete dogs and caused crashes left right and center (although for some bizzare reason they were absolute magic with PhotoShop  ).

Even with an ideal system running absolutely perfectly you should still brace yourself for a CTD once in a blue moon since the stuff that's going on in the background in a game of this scope is simply staggering and all it takes is one momentary drop-out and *poof*. With EU2 I will still get maybe one or possibly 2 crashes during the course of a 100-200 hour game. EU1 might still, after 10 patches, have a few more than that. The majority of the patches were not to fix crash-like problems but rather to add events and tweak the AI and game balance issues.

Uglyduck's comments on EU are likely to be correct...give your system a bit of time if it seems to be locking up. If you're getting the BSD (blue screen of death) then you're scuppered. From everything I've read in comparrison, it might conceivably be worth returning EU1 and getting EU2 instead because I think you'll find it to be a really captivating game that will keep you entertained for hours and hours and...well, here we are a year later adn I'm still playing it on a very regular basis. :)

I'll confess that I came on board with EU2 so my direct experience w/ the original game is squat and my approach is from more of a "what could be happening system-wise" than it is from a "oh, I remember that one". :) I'll see if I can come up with any other ideas in the interim (I'll poke around in the archives) for the crash on exit.

Could you confirm the build version of DirectX that you're using.

I did the following, went into the game and then hit the exit button. It locked hard as normal, then I walked away for 5 minutes or so and when I came back it was on the desktop, wierd. If you find anything else I would be greatful.

I'll keep looking and let you know if I see anything that seems to present a possible solution. It strikes me as some sort of resource allocation problem that hangs until Win98 "realises" that the assets have been released. *sigh* I wish that '98 had the same sort of activity log functions as NT/2000/XP. It'd be far easier to trace.

8.1b is definitely current and no problem for most people so I guess we can strike that one off the list of possibilities.

Check back here in a few days in case I've found anything during my sifting through the archives. It's too bad that the forum search functions aren't working correctly at the moment (they'll be on line again once the server is upgraded) so I have to go through them one by one. I may not be able to do a thorough look until the weekend...just so you know.
