hello everybody.
i bought eu2 last week and am experiencing some 'slight' problems with it.

first i tried to play eu2 without updating it -> it crashed to desktop every 5-10, thus being totally unplayable. i got pissed and updated it to the latest version (1.06). that helped a little but the game still crashes like every 30-60 minutes. so if you have any clue why the game does that, please post a reply.
(btw. i tried renaming that avi-folder to avi_old but it didn't help)

my comp:
amd 1ghz thunderbird
512mb sdram
radeon 7500
sb live

I split this out of the other thread so it's easier for me to keep track of and make sure we get you up and running.

Can I ask you to give me full system details including the drivers you're running. The most common issue (after the binkplayer/avi one) relates to older drivers not working correctly with the installed version of DirectX.

There's a "form" in the "Read First" sticky at the top of the forum (also linked in my sig.) that will show you all the info we'll need to help you.

You should also update your drivers and you may find that reducing hardware acceleration (or turning it off) will help.

Let us know. :)

okay, i'll check the driver information as soon as i get home.

btw i had the exactly same crashing thingie with HoI too. upgrading it to the latest version fixed the problem.

and thanks for helping me out, mrT

No problem. I'll wait for the info then. :)

i tried playing the game last evening and everything worked fine. after 8 hours (eek) of wars and conquest the game decided that it's time for me to go to bed and crashed.
autosaving every year helps to control my rage pretty well :p

i took a looksie at the computer specs and driver information.
the display drivers are quite old (6 months). i'll download the latest drivers and see if the game werks then.

btw. what's with this song Falalalan? hearing it makes me wanna throw my computer out of the window. awful.

LOL! Yep...that's a common response to repeated listenings of that song.

Eight hours of play before a crash is pretty darn good. It's extremely rare these days for computer games to last that long considering the amazing complexity of designing something that is compatible with multiple OS's and millions of different possible hardware configurations...not to mention all those memory-hungry TSR's that people tend to have running. Even slight power surges or temperature variences can cause things to go haywire long enough to crash a game.

As long as you keep your game set to autosave every year (or three) then when the eventual crash comes you'll lose very little. When a really intense war breaks out you should also think about manually saving every so often (just in case) since all that extra activity does increase the chances of a crash.

You'll probably be fine, even if you don't update your drivers (although you should definitely update them anyway for the latest DirectX compatibility). If you find you're suddenly getting lots of random crashes, or if it's always crashing at the same point in the game, or if it's always crashing when you take a specific action (like clicking on a button) then we'll need to have a closer look at it.

ok. i updated those drivers and now the game seems to work better. it still crashes daily but i can live with it.

Great!

I, too, still get the occasional CTD but I tend to blame it on Uncle Bill's OS and Dx8/9 than on Father Johan's code. :)
