Hey guys, so I was wondering, the dragon system is cool and all, but why not make something similar with dire-wolves as well? They are very important in the story, and it could lead to a a lot of immersive events related to their presence. They should have a lower martial level in comparison to dragons and a shorter life-span, and when "taming" them you would become a warg. And maybe you could breed them like you do slaves?

This is actually an interesting idea. I would like to see something come of it.

Indeed. Jon's saved Castle Black from a Whight attack and Robb's helped him defeat Jamie and his army. Not Field of Fire level stuff but it should give a small martial boost to a commander with a direwolf and an army that's had a direwolf deployed against it should take a moral hit. I'm thinking +5 marital and +1 personal combat when leading an army and 25% of a dragon's moral hit when deployed. No prestige or opinion bonuses beyond what it already gives.

We decided against having normal skinchanger companions as characters because unlike dragons they do not usually have multiple owners that they outlive instead they have one and will live for say 15 years, making them a character just adds that little bit more clutter that isn't needed.

There already is battle events in the mod for all the battle capable animal companions (wolf, direwolf, bear, snowbear, shadowcat). Also having those animals does provide a martial boost.

Actually, they do, Varamyr Sixskins stole most of his companions from other wargs. Like with dragons, being a warg would be being a "dragon rider", while having a pet, like Robb or Jeor Mormont would be having the animal as "friend". And about the clutter, that's why I only suggested Dire-wolves, not many of them around :) And yeah, they wouldn't live much, even though we do not know how long is a dire-wolf's life-span, that's why breeding them and actually instructing them would be important.

Huh why?

That's not how it is in the books.
I meant tame as in the dragon taming mechanics, comparing it to the owner getting inside the animals body, not as in simply owning a pet.

Notice the bit where I said usually. Also the direwolves are never really said to be on the magic level or dragons. Just very large wolves who bond well with a person

Hum, but currently almost no one seems to naturally get animal companions nor is the trait hereditary (as it should be to an extend).

The people who can get the traits are the old gods religions including beyond the wall with the addition of the farwynds and westfords.
Why would it be hereditary?

Because what would the chances of all 5 of the children of a single family be wargs if it wasn't hereditary?

Not all of them are wargs. Besides, Starks are POV characters, we don't have much information about other families. Maybe all of Dacey Mormont's sisters are wargs :p
It could also happen because of how they were raised, we don't know.

They are all wargs, just all except Bran are untrained for it. They all get wolf dreams, they all feel connections to their wolves and the wolves all feel connections between each other.

The chance is something known as they would be rather less interesting if they didn't, I 100% see that as GRRM needing a way to make them seem cooler so give them some semi magical-esque creatures like their sigil

By that logic, every Blackwood would be a skinchanger because Boodraven is, and every Stark would be a skinchanger when we know that many were not.

What you are talking about is reflected in the mod though. The events (which fire for the father/guardian) factor in whether or not the father has the greensight trait. So if you have greensight there is an increased chance your children will develop it.

Bran is one, Arya and Jon are hinted to may be able to and Robb and Sansa nothing at all (That I remember). Many people have strange dreams as well in Westeros. And as I said, you never know, what if skinchanging is not a skill that comes naturally to people, but actually a gift from the old gods to certain characters or given away by Bloodraven himself?

Sansa lost her wolf before any of them (even Bran) started developing their powers. Robb was having wolf dreams, it's how he knew about the secret goat path that Greywind found to get around the Golden Tooth. Also GRRM confirmed long ago that all 5 Stark kids in the main books are skinchangers/wargs.
