Contrary to what a few people have been saying recently, DirectX 9.0 is not in finished form yet. It is (as of this date) now in public beta for general download.

We have already seen a variety of issues relating to the use of the new version, although some people are reporting no problems with it whatsoever. Your chances of running into a problem probably increase if any components of your system are "out of the ordinary" - meaning 3rd party chipsets, sound cards, etc... It will take a while for those manufacturers to release new drivers that are compatible.

Before you upgrade, make sure you save any important savegame files or mods you want to keep in a separate folder since we have heard of some instances where loading a savegame and playing will corrupt the file. If you have a backup then you can always roll back the DirectX driver to 8.1 (build 2600) and recover your game.

We'll still try to help you with problems, but keep in mind that this is new to us too so it might take longer and require some trial and error experimentation. Patience will be a virtue. :)

Latest update.....

Miscrosoft, in Uncle Bill's infiinite wisdom, now has two download loctions for DirectX 9.0. One lists it as a public beta and the other (with more recent dating) lists it as a full-blown working version.

I'm now running some extensive testing with the 9.0 "full" release on XP and the first thing it did was cause the game to crash instantly when I tried to launch a save game or any scenario. Reducing my hardware acceleration solved this problem but gave me a "sound only plays once" type problem. This was completely resolved by renaming the avi folder to avi_old (which skips the binkplay intro clips) and I was able to go back to full hardware acceleration and have had no problems at all.

I've opened this thread so other people can post their experiences here so I have a better idea how it's working on different systems. If you've tried it, please let me know whether you had any problems and, if so, how you were able to resolve them. Once I've got a good hand;e on it, I'll add a general fix to the FAQ.

If you're posting here, please make sure you include your OS and system specs please.

Thanks.

Do you not have a System Restore Pont you can go back to?
I do not usually download the next Directx but wait until it comes on a game CD. By then the bugs are usually worked out of it. However having a roll back point gave me the confidence to download it and so far it has been good.

Yeah, i also usually just wait and load it off of the cd but i was quick on the trigger this time :p and no i didnt back it up so i dunno. I just installed the 8.0 and it worked perfectly fine.

Very strange. I've started a new thread on this topic in the MP forum. Please let me know in that thread if you run into any other information that may contribute to tracking down the problem.
