So I know it's possible to edit game files to play pagan rulers, or i think it was.

However i've been away from CK for such a long time that i've forgotten about the possible drawbacks of playing a pagan ruler. Can anyone list the differences from a christian one?

You probably live near the Mongols.
Or near the Almoravids ;).

When everyone is your enemy it can be quite difficult :(. And it may be worse if you have a province which can be a crusade target.

You may have events to gain claims on duke and king titles. It is possible to edit the save to make the ruler catholic, load, create titles, save, edit to become pagan again and reload.

I don't know if you count it as a drawback, but as a Pagan you will get Pagan events which are clearly meant to be AI events and you miss a lot of events which the Christians will get. Some AI events are useful, like free troops during the war, but IMO Pagans get worse set of events than the Christians.

What makes them obviously AI events?

That probably means that Christianity is weak in your game. The AI knows to attack weaker realms first.
A moderately skilled player's country will always be among the strongest realms in the game.

Mongols don't follow the rules, they attack everyone. But before they appear, usually pagans and jews are worst off: religious enemies to both christians and muslims, and no strong realms to protect them.

They're cheats. They also lack proper text descriptions.

AI events give bonus income and troops, because otherwise AI controlled small pagan chiefdoms would be even more pushover than they are now. Player isn't supposed to benefit from such events.

You can edit the save file and put "court = 6" for the character you want as bishop, so that you can have a female pagan bishop if you like :).

True, but in order to do that you need to save, quit, edit and reload. I've found that firing this event is less work - and you can still have female bishops.

What's really fun is to edit the game files changing a pagan ruler to a Christian one, and playing the convert conquering king. (Ideally this should happen in CK by default for pagan rulers near important Christian states, but doesn't).

A Lithuanian ruler is a good choice, as you are able to create an ethnic kingdom. But you can also edit other ethnic kingdoms into the game, like Mordvins or Great Perm, and do likewise for Mordvin and Permian rulers.
