Editing with notepad not working with Steam...HELP!!!

Okay folks, first-timer to these forums as a poster. Many years of reading and I have always found what I needed on my own...but this time I am beaten.

I bought this awesome game through Steam. I edited a few items with notepad and saved the file. Launched the game and none of the changes were evident. I tried to launch the game with the .exe file that was in the Mods folder that came with the download but when I try I get a configuration file not found error. When I use the launcher that was loaded onto my desktop by Steam the game launches, but my changes are not there.

I am by far not knowledgable with computers and how they work...but I was smart enough to figure out that since the icon on my DT points to the steam website as a URL and not to the game on my harddrive that must explain why my changes are not evident. Tried to find the database in my steam folder and it was not there either.

Long story short, how or where do I need to make the changes to the text files so either the steam launcher will connect to them or how do I get the .exe file in my darkest hour folder work? That .exe files tells me a configuration file is missing.

THanks to all that reply to try and help this old, ignorant, noobie.
 
Follow-up. I tried running the launcher in my darkest hour folder as admin. That got rid of the configuration file issue, but now I get a message stating --- excel file not found --- do you want to contninue? After selecting ignore the game crashes. The launcher is located in this path C:/games/darkest hour
 
Thanks for the reply AC. I edited the files in the folder you mentioned. I saved them, relaunched the game, and failed to see the changes. Any ideas?
 
I went C:\games\darkest hour\mods\DH full\db\units\divisions\air transports and changed the range and cost. When I go back the changes I made are still there...but when launching the game or even a new game through the steam installed launcher the changes are not there. I really believe the launcher is not pointing to my games folder. The reason I say that is when I look at the shortcut to launch the game it is pointing to a URL.

As to the launcher that is in the games\darkest hour folder, when I open the files with admin rights I get a message stating excel file not found, thus that launcher does not work.

Any suggestions? Thanks again for taking your time to try and help me.
 
I thought I had done that, but perhaps I was mistaken. I will do as you suggest and see what happens. Thanks for your time.
 
I tried to no avail. FIguring maybe I should download the beta patch and the new .exe installer as well it would help. Once again after launching, while the lanche showed the current version as 1.02, I got the excel file missing error again. Also, again, when I used the Steam generated launcher that was installed on my desktop when downloaded it launches the game, but only the 1.01 version and with none of my changes.

How can I get the launcher that is in my C:\games\darkest hour to work??? It keeps giving me that frustrating excel file missing error...I am so frustrated.

I really think of O can get the launcher in the same loaction as the game to work instead of that Steam one this will solve all of my problems. Please help.
 
I'm afraid you will have to reinstall your game, unfortunately I don't have other ideas.
Regarding the patch, if I were you I would stick to the 1.01 patch as the "missing file" error has been probably caused by your changes, but with Steam it's better not to apply beta patch 1.02.
