Ahh Lithunian, last of the lands to worship the pagan Gods before they joined the glorious brotherhood of Christianity, and also became subserviant dogs to their Polish masters.
And so we are to this day, and shall be as far as one can see into the misty veils of the future. We had but one command from the King of the Poles, convert.

And we did, for we must please God in this life to be restored to his Kingdom when it cometh, and surely converting people would ensure our accension to Heaven.

But wait, a young noble said, surely God would also appreciate the killing of infidels. And counsel was held and agreed that this would please God. And so an army was sent into the Muslim nation of the Golden Horde, and there was much pillaging as the Golden Horde's armies were scattered to the wind and the sea. But the Infidel was cunning and brought his infidel friends to the war as well, however we merely decided that this would please God that much more.
This may be true but many sacrifices were made to destroy these new infidel from Astrakhan and Crimea, our greatest leader gave his life in a retreat to hold off the enemy, unfortunately the enemy cut him and his army down. We comforted ourselves knowing they are with God now.

After this our second greatest leader led a mighty attack upon the Golden Hordes fortresses, assualting them carrying the crucifix before them and in some instances cowering behind said cross. It worked and God granted us victory and the Golden Horde surrendered to our righteous brutality.

But with the sweet wine of victory barely fading we were told by our master that we must surrender our liberated lands and a valuable northern province to the Russian schismatic, we did so with much bitterness and grumbling although our Russian friend did compensate us money is no replacement for saving souls of schismatics.

Neverless with that money and all money we gathered for 10 years we converted the heretics in our land, and in each instances they instantly saw the light and fell to their knees in deference to God and started paying 33% more tax, an unexpected side effect but we thank God for all favours he gives us.

After this we were told to attack the order of the Teutons, something that sat heavily upon our souls until we got dispensation from the Pope himself (or someone who called himself the Pope) to do it.
And so we marched upon the order and their fortresses fell after much praying and waiting apart from the fortress of Kurland which withstood our most potent prayers and hymns. We were stumped and asked God for guidance but he answered only in the attack of the Crimean Tatars. These heathen barbarians were ahead of us in Technology and numbers but behind us in sheer zealotry and we intented to prove that when our second greatest general marched on their camp.
However we lost badly and were forced to flee like Thracians before the might of St David and now we sit in prayer for someone to deliver us from our plight.

300 ducats please :)

And now from Lisbon:

Royal Declaration of Algarve:

It is our pleasure to communicate to Europe that in all our wisdom we had decided that:

1. Portugal claims all islands from the coasts of Africa until the Bay of Bengal.
2. We specifically declare the intention of Portugal to bring indian lands under portuguese rule.

Portugal can be interested in other lands, but those are the ones we are most interested in. Any trespassing will be considered an attack on Portuguese interests. If other countries are interested in those lands, we advise them to discuss the matter with our most glorious kingdom. We are open to negotiations, but we will not let our interests and goals to be trampled on.

Signed Manuel III
(Seal of the Privy Council)

Portuguese in Africa and Asia.

Everything started in a sunny day in 1492, when some ships under Diaz and some soldiers under Corvilha sailed to the unknown (well, to Fernando Poo). And they discovered lands, and Corvilha set foot near Guinea, built a city and discovered new provinces to our merchants and strange barbarian lands -although they all got forts as good as our own it seemed. The king was not overly pleased with the news, dreaming not of people founding cities, sending traders or discovering lands full of savages difficult to conquer. He wanted something else. The road to India had not being discovered to do that he thought.

But in the beginning only news about more cities and more merchants were received. He was only mildly interested when the explorers discovered new coasts.

But he was greatly impressed when news about kingdoms in India. That could be something. That Corvilha or Camones could had explored all the western coast of Africa and discovered several provinces was nothing in comparison. And he was more impressed when the Portuguese army finished a reform that allowed to use new weapons, unknown in India. And he was even more delighted when he talked with the new able commanders of the Stado de India (a post created even before Portugal owned a single land there, but we can forgive his optimism). With firearms and the abilities of Albuquerque and Almeida, the king was -at last- pleased.

First Viyanagar fell under portuguese troops, and Calicut was taken as the first portuguese port in India. And then Gujarat -abandoned by all their allies- fell under Portuguse rule in a swift campaing of 4 months. And with it one of the two most important trade centers in India. And then new lands east of India were discovered.

The king was amused when he learnt that in some of our african colonies, trade was so high and profitable that several merchants decided to settle there permanently, creating a new center of trade in Southern Africa. Maybe colonization is not that bad he thought.

But colonization was not the desire of his heart. Conquering and dominating the indian trade, that was why he had sent ships and troops there, that is why their most foremost commanders were in India (and almost all the portuguese army). What had started in 1492, it should be finished.

Portuguese in Europe.

When Diaz and Corvilha started their travels, it was expected that Portugal could forgot about the old continent. Or at most send merchants there (as it was done, specially in Andalusia, Paris and Venice, making Portugal one of the most important trader nations).

But, alas, it was not to be. Because, as startled ambassadors told the king in Lisbon, a giant alliance was moving against the noble House of the Habsburgs, and suddenly venetians, turks and even the french were moving against them. And that didn't seemed good in Lisbon.

And then it was decided to put our sword to help the unjustly attacked, and we join Spain in war against France. In that war, fighting alongside the spanish, the portuguese saw for first time the might of firearms, and decided to copy the spanish models. Our troops campaigned in southern france, and was gladly and proudly that our king received the new that the city of Clermont was under a portuguese flag. The war was vicious, and although half of France was under foreign control, they fought with great gallantry and Foix defeated in northern France the foremost spanish commanders, causing great slaughter in them. But even that effort could not avoid french defeat. But, alas, Austria was also defeated and lost fair provinces to the attackers.

In the following years, several news arrived in Lisbon about great wars in Europe. But in those years, Portugal was focused in India so not much was understood. But this was learnt, that Europe is a dangerous place and Portugal need to put a careful eye there.

(and let's hope for a nice random number, and then a nice prize)

AAR RUSSIA 1492-1510

A whole new unknown territory lies to the East of Russia. There are several hurdles to overcome. Number one is that the 4-province nation of Kazan blocks the passage to the TI in the East. Kazan in in alliance with GH, Crimea and Astrakhan. Quite formidable. Add to that, some devious constructor has put a 35 all cavalry army in the most northern plains province of the GH, adjacent to us. And a schejk Ahmed as an able leader – no doubt imported from more Southern latitudes. How to approach this force? We must get through since we get a conquistador in 1495, three years after start.

After having incurred 10% inflation in the first session of the Wednesday game as Lithuania fighting winter wars vs more or less the same enemies a new tactic was decided upon. Instead of as DOWing in March and attacking over the border, the usual procedure, we instead DOWed in October and then did nothing. :D We let them attack empty provinces. They choose to put most of their armies in the plains province of Ryazan, the only province of my vassal Ryazan that I had called to my side. That suited me perfectly. My 84k waited on the side line for the Winter which saw some 50k enemy die from hunger and cold. Then in Summer , when the defence bar of Ryazan had turned orange, my 35k all cavalry army attacked the 32k that was left. All enemies were killed and I lost only half my relieve force. After that peaceful sieging on 50% maintenance could start. Heavy losses from attrition still took place but the starting money 1000d were very useful. Thus we could take 2 provinces from Kazan, one ortho and then Perm which was the on blocking the passage to the East. After that GH, the alliance leader, offered us three ortho provinces we had captured and we took them to end the war quickly which had dragged on some years.

Our conq now explored into the emtpyness to the East. But lo and behold. Just three provinces in it ended when we detected a new nation, the muslim nation Sibir. But before we attacked them Lithuania by mistake attacked the GH and took Donetsk (port province in the Black Sea) which was in our sphere of interest. Thus they agreed to sell it to us together with Pskov, a former vassal of us that AI Lithuania annexed early on.

While the first war had been tough with no CRT advantage we had now reached LT9 (all investments into LT since start) and we captured all Siberian provinces in 5 months. But we only took the two most Northern because that was enough to gain access to what turned out to be the real great emptiness. The bad news was that we had to DOW without a CB thus getting some nasty BB points.

Besides our scripted conquistador we got two more which I believe were random, if so I quite lucky. :D They have been very busy and thus we have explored most of the East already in 1510 and reached the border of China and just at the end of hte session we reached Tchumkan at the East coast of Eurasia. Some gold provinces were explored one of which is now a city. How many gold provinces we have found will not be told. ;)

At the end of the session the king of Lithuania called for help vs the infidel. Thus we are now at our support limit ready to strike for the liberation of the nation of Astrakhan. Although our stab costs really mean we should wait some years until the present three conversions are finished. Not more than three wrong religion provinces this early is recommended. But we are always willing to support those who are dear to our heart.

Both DP slider moves were centra +1. We also got an inno+1 from event.

------------------

For future need the following dates are relevant

1496 Jun 22: Perm, Samara - no gold in Samara in this scenario :( – (Kazan)
1496 Jul 8: Burtasia, Mordva, Voronezh (GH)
1501 Mar 15: Donetsk (Lithuania)
1503 Nov 12 Koda, Khanty (Sibir)

----------

For the next session I request a core on the province of Astrakhan.

The Austrian archduchy and Kingdom of France will refrain from military operations intended for either state for the next several years. To recover and give due respect to all those who have recently lost their lives.

England dedicated all of its efforts to keep Brandenburg alive. It was costly but in the end it paid off. Diplomatic effort secured border with Poland and war effort secured BB's position in N. Germany. Colonisation is limpy but existance of BB is reward of its own. Miscommunication caused by Ottoman secret service caused relation with the Ottomans to cool off a bit, but time will show what will happen with once too good relations with Ottomans. England will also be more inclined to Austria from now on but while trying to preserve good relations with our friends in France. Portugal's stance cut almost all diplomatic relations with England. Portugal obviously wants war and we'll be prepared. Threats are not welcome in Buchingam pallace. It seems Portugal have seen its mistake since diplomat is sent. We hope he will be less flippant then the letter from King. French King on the other hand proved to be very friendly orientated and we'll never forget that. We had some miscommunication with the Spain too, but in the end we befirended each other. England thinks it has a powerfull and honourable ally in Spain.

Since when is a threat to refuse to grant military access? A military access asked without any reason given previously? Actually, without any previous diplomatic talk before such petition was sent? Portugal don't sign diplomatic dealings unless is very clear their reasons. Strange things talking about cuting diplomatic relations, since England didn't started any.

It is extremely arrogant to think that Portugal should accept any english petition, and refusing means war or threats.

And Portugal didn't seen 'its mistake'. We, when we want to start negotiations with someone, usually start with sending a diplomat and we talk.

Actually, the kingdom of Portugal demands apology from England for those remarks.

(BTW, the AAR didn't put new information about England wanting BB alive, that was clear from their actions. No need to hide information that is already known)

Actually England was talking about that issue with islands. Portugal said that whoever wants to colonise in areas Portugal is dreaming of becoming his shall meet resistance. Now I haven't read what those island were but English King made thousand peaces from your letter when he heard such stance. Later Porto's King send another diplomat (ICQ message) and we will listen as long as new threat is not made.

Issue about MA is so insignificant that Englisih king wasn't even informed.

The same declaration said that we were open to negotiations about the claims. And we rightly think that there is no threat in our claims, since we are -for our own will- reducing the claims that the good Pope gave to us. It is not like there is only islands between Tangiers and the coast of India to colonize and conquer.

King Joohoo, King of Sweden and Finland - 1492 to 1510

Live in the north is not always easy, well not the winters, that my men had to experience in a war, a cold war against Denmark. The war took like ten years before the Danes gave up. Damn hard provinces to take. Anyway we took Jämtland, Gotland, Skåne, Fyn and Schlesvig. The rest will be a dance on roses as we say in Sweden. The Danes had a stronger navy when Sweden had but I think they lost most of it in the end of the war. Anyway even for an AI it was hard to beat them. But as it is AI, the whole campaign was a success.

The Kalmar Union was definately over as Denmark was no longer the strongest power in North.
Some Swedes threw down this portrait of Erik of Pommeria.

After that, we licked our wounds and waited to invade the Teutonic Knights.
Which we did, I had three leaders, two with one artillery bonus each which was nice.
From TO we took Opelia(an island in Swedish Dagö I think) and Estland with a CoT 8) .

A nice session from Sweden though the costs for the wars was a bit much I think and the took too much time.

King of England will send his diplomat to Lisbon ASAP.

Bob,

I wanned HoG to survive! And he almost didn't. I never said anything about big, strong and horrifing BB.

Next target for help will surely be Austria.

While the need for a strong German state is without doubt of healthy disposition to the integrity of the Empire, the safety of England is more secured by using it's impressive funds for it's own destiny. We fear for the health of our most dear friend the King of England, for while he funds a frightingly aggressive state in North Germany, he squanders the needs of the English themselves and trades insults with the Portuguese.

Our relations are excellent with Brandenburg, Portugal, and England and if France can act as a conduit of good will and mediation on the intents of these states we would be most pleased to do so.

His majesty will be most welcome in Paris over the next several months, to broad discussions on the condition of Europe and the future course of our mutual aims.

In 1492 our Spanish brethren ended their 500 year struggle, with the fall of Granada. The Mohomadans who once ruled it over God fearing Spaniards were shown a punishment long overdue, while the misguided subjects who had so long worshiped a false god were either fast to convert or dealt with swiftly.

But the struggle was not going so well in the east. Sitting in his lair, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire who had taken great care to befriend the nations of Europe, consulted with the devil. With the support of the evil one, the Turk made plans for a vicious attack on our lands, the Hapsburg Archduchy of Austria.

We were the only ones to not be fooled by the Turkish facade. For years my forefathers watched as the Ottomans conquered, one after another, the Christian realms standing in their way. Even mighty constantinople, which left us only too aware of our danger.

And thus we remained vigilant, for we would not allow the same fate to befall Austria. We were prepared to deflect an onslaught from the Turks. But not what happened.

When the inevitable invasion came, and Sultan Bayazid with the devil at his side stepped on Austrian soil, we let them approach, drawing them into the trap that waited. They died by the thousands, not by sword by by hunger, a far more deadly enemy.

If it had only been the Turks, our army might now have taken the field against them, and pushed the armies of hell back to the coast. However, they were needed elsewhere. Fooled by greed, the Venetians and French invaded Tirol and the Low Countries. 70k that could've gone east had to stay to hold Belgium.

Only by the quick marching of Spanish forces into southern France saved us from total destruction. In the end, the Sultan, along with his Venetian vassals(something we learned after the war) offered a compromised peace of only two provinces to Venice in order to escape the fate of Granada which it appeared Spain was about to bring.

On the contrary though, the Spanish were busy plundering city after city in southern France rather than engaging its armies. This was the reason why WE agreed to the compromise. If the Spanish had listened to us, and marched north quickly to engage and destroy France's armies rather than bleed away troops to attrition and losses from assaults in southern France, then it would've indeed been possible to completely defeat all our enemies.

By the time they finally did march north, Austrian dissillusionment had brought the OE-Ven portion of the war to an end. Spanish forces were also greatly diminished. And this allowed the French to defeat El Gran Capitan.

What was the value of conquering all those southern provs? Spain couldn't stabhit for them without leaving us alone to die. Did Spain intend to stabhit for them and leave us alone? Well, we advised them to march north for this reason, and were ignored. So one could wonder. That's eventually what they did, leave us to fight France alone.

Luckily for us, the regent of France was deposed soon after, and the true monarch had not the will to fight on. Otherwise things might have been far worse.

After this we tried to recover. Von Frunsburg took command of the army in 99, at the end of the French war, and submitted plans for an invasion of Venice. They were the ones who enherited the spoils from the war. Yet they were not thoughtful enough to invest in LT. This couldn't be bad planning? It was too tempting to ignore, anyway.

Therefore von Frunsburg invaded when the truce expired, and swept through the lands. Once we began stabhitting, the OE and France joined.

The OE's entrance into the war was expected. When the French talked about entering, well, we hoped Spain would do something. It turned out all they were interested in was their beloved economy. So we fought the French, Venetians(well, not really. They peaced before much action with the others anyway), and the OE again. I think we put up a better fight than before, but Frunsburg couldn't quite pull it together. Took two provs from Venice, but ended up losing one to the OE and one to France, a net of -1.

Our enemies fought quite well, but I think main credit for the defeat goes to Spain. The betrayal of a friend as close as the Spanish is far worse than the opposition of a known enemy. They clearly felt some gilt, as they sent 100D gifts now and then, and maybe that has helped ease the consciences of Fernando and Isabella, but it has not helped much in the house of Hapsburg.
They started their reign as champions of Christendom. But now what have they become?
