Hi everyone,

I am experiencing a bug that people encountered in 2016 when launching Crusader Kings II from Steam.

Problem
When running Robocopy, it mentions this :

ERROR 53 (0x00000035) Accessing Source Directory \samba-prod-01\buildserver\binaries\ck2_RD.exe

It says that it does not find the path to the directory

I have linked you the screenshot of the 00_GET CK EXE local file the shows the error. (it is in french)

I already tried
- Uninstalling the game, installing again (from steam)
- Verifying the integrity of the game cache (from steam options)
- Installing the game on another computer check if it was working (it was working) and then copy pasting the folder to my own computer and replacing the files with the new ones from the other computer.
- Repairing the windows C++ redistributable

but steam client does not want to launch the game. It only displays: "Launching the game" then "Synchronizing" and nothing more.

So, I came here on the paradox forum and found a topic from 2016 talking about the same issue. Here is the link to the paradox's topic: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/missing-executable.965001/

I would like to know if there is something to do to fix this for me (and probably other people that are having the same issue as well.)

Thank you for your time

Have a nice day!

Kevin

As you can see at the end of that thread, that was a Steam problem that has been resolved for over 2 years. So your issue is certainly different.

What error robocopy gets is not very useful, I don't think - the error in your title here is only in that circumstance, not when just running the game? It is not surprising it gets an error trying to find a file on the build server.

Has this game ever run okay on this computer? Or never?

Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your fast answer.

The game has never been running on this computer, unfortunately.
The pc is new and running on windows 10 pro 1809.

Do you have any idea what could be the problem? Windows? some missing file?
If you need more info to solve this out, just tell me I will be glad to send it

Thanks again for your time!

I don#t think that has anything to do with your problem.
I get an ERROR 53 too when i run GET CK EXE.bat (which is not the executable for the game), though the part after samba-prod-01 is different.
Either way, i assume it's irrelevant to your problem and misleading.

I'd try the currently common antivir-off-before-start fix instead....or the Evolve/Discord/similar-off fix.

Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II\ _CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\ and run dxsetup.exe
Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II\ _CommonRedist\vcredist\2010\ and run vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe

Also if you have installed a gaming VPN app called Evolve, or the MSI Gaming App, or Duet, disable it as it clashes with this game.

IF that doesn't help, DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

Hello Aardvark and Andrew,

@Aardvark Bellay:
I'd try the currently common antivir-off-before-start fix instead....or the Evolve/Discord/similar-off fix.
I already tried switching the antivir off but still not working.

@both:
I do not have any VPN app like Evolve, Duet or the MSI Gaming app. However, I have Discord and AMD Adrenalin 2019 Edition 19.1.1. Already tried launching the game while disabling Discord and the CK2 profile on AMD Adrenalin but still not working.

@AndrewT:

The error in your title here is only in that robocopy circumstance, not when just running the game?
Yes the error, is only in Robocopy. When I launch the game through Steam, it says "Running" then "Syncing" then nothing happens like if it has opened and closed the game. When running the game through the steam folder via CK2game.exe nothing happens.

Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II\ _CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\ and run dxsetup.exe
Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Crusader Kings II\ _CommonRedist\vcredist\2010\ and run vcredist_x86.exe and vcredist_x64.exe
Could not find the _CommonRedlist folder in the Crusader Kings II folder. Here is a screenshot of my folder --> https://imgur.com/a/bMHEb1B

But as I understood these files are the DirectX and the C++ redistributables from 2010. I already uninstalled and reinstalled the Windows C++ x86 and x64 versions from 2005 to 2017. The DirectX version installed is the DX12.
I have linked the DxDiag.txt file

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .
I did not find any of these log files. Even searching through the windows file explorer :(

Just for info:
A few days ago, there was an "update" in Steam for Ck2, which mysteriously deleted the files in these folders.
When i then moved folder out and did a "verify integrity of game files" for CK2, it doesn't even create the _CommonRedist folder anymore.

They must have removed it, no idea why. DirectX12 is of no use to the game, it needs DX 9.0c. Please Install these three Microsoft modules:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=8328
https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=13523
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
(run dxsetup.exe after extracting from this download)

What antivirus app do you use? Add ck2game.exe to its exceptions list/whitelist.

If none of that helps Use Notepad to make a new text file called userdir.txt in the Steam CK2 folder where ck2game.exe is. In that file place a single dot, save and exit. This tells the game to write the user files right there instead of under Documents.

Ok guys, the problem is solved! I can play the game again!
I first tried to launch the game after installing the DX9.0 and the microsoft modules but it was not working.

If none of that helps Use Notepad to make a new text file called userdir.txt in the Steam CK2 folder where ck2game.exe is. In that file place a single dot, save and exit. This tells the game to write the user files right there instead of under Documents.
Then I just created the notepad file as Andrew said and the miracle happened.

Thank you both again for helping!

Have a great day/evening :)

That means that the AV app is in the way. Which one do you use?

If by AV app, you mean anti-virus app, I did not install any anti-virus at the moment.
That almost certainly means you have Windows Defender active. If its Controlled Folder Access feature is enabled, you need to add ck2game.exe to the Apps Allowed Through list in that feature.
