Errors with installing 1.06 NA version

When I try to apply the patch, I get a couple of messages "corrupt I/O file"; otherwise, the patch process continues. But when trying to start the game, a "mouse" or "cursor" related bmp is declared in error, and the game freezes. :( :(

My computer is a Dell Dimension 4500, 2.4 Ghz. WinXP. I can follow up with related component stats, but I am first asking if this is encountered by others. If so, what to do?
 
Extremely rare, so far, for applying the patch. I have a few possible solutions for you...

Are you sure you're downloading the correct patch?

Just in case, try doing a complete uninstall and then reinstall and repatch since there might have been a problem related to patching 1.05 to 1.06. I'd also download the patch once more (sorry about the size) in case is was corrupted in your original download.

Also, before trying to start the game, rename your avi folder to avi_old in case it somehow relates to the Binkplayer.

Have you updated all your drivers recently (sound and graphics)?

Have you updated Windows lately? Have a look at the recommended updates as well (instead of just the critical ones) since there was at least one "optional" update that relates to graphics issues.

If that doesn't work, I'll need a detailed system description. The easiest way to give me that is to run DirectX diagnostics and then use the "Save all information..." function to save it as a txt file, then open it with Notepad and paste the full report here. It's long, but extremely useful. I'll sift through it and see what I can figure out.

Yes, it was the NA version of the 1.06 patch. Priorhand I had EUII running in 1.04 while I had stopped playing it months earlier, but I am trying to get back into this classic again.

Through Windows update, my drivers are supposed to be current, but I suppose I'll have to verify more directly with other utility programs. Otherwise, all relevant Windows updates in the "recommended" section as might apply are also installed.

I will try again, using the "avi_old" folder suggestion of yours. If I have problems again, I will run DX diagnostics per your suggestion and post the report here.
 
Same problem....

With a fresh download of v106 NA and new install of EU2, then attempting to apply the patch, I still get the same problem.

This time, I took note of the "corrupt file" which is flagged during the patch install. It appears to be "early.mp3," at about 30-40% of patch installation.

Yep...sorry about that. A couple of really busy days at the office has kept me away. Let's see...

First off, your video driver is quite old (they've been through 4 updates since then) and is almost certainly the culprit. You should be running with the 41.09 December 3rd version which you'll find here. I couldn't locate the latest version of your sound card driver but I'm pertty sure that there must be at least one update since then since there were a few changes in XP's SP1 that required tweaking. See if you can locate those if possible (Dell might have put a link on your system when it was installed in you computer, or look it up in the hardware manual).

The other thing I noticed is that you have a Sidewinder attached to your system. See if unplugging it resolves the problem (you'd be amazed where these things can cause faults...)

Thanks for following up. Unfortunately, the problem is the same as before.

The video driver is updated per your recommendation. The sound card driver was already current.

I did a fresh install, with as many background programs (including the antivirus) disabled, and then tried to apply the NA 1.06 patch.

I still get the very same error: "Corrupt I/O file while trying to install" or something like that. It happens at the point where "early.mp3" is tagged for install/update.

But I have no problems installing the game from the CD priorhand.

Could it be possible that the noted I/O file (at the point of early.mp3 install) is indeed corrupted within the patch? Each time that I've downloaded the patch, I get the same error in the same place.

I'd be inclined to agree with you except I've downloaded the patch and applied it to my NA version so I know that the patch isn't at fault unless there are download errors.

Let's start from square one...time consuming but more helpful in isolating the problem:

  • Test #1: if you uninstall everything and then install the CD version (probably either 1.00 or 1.01) will it launch correctly for you now?
  • Test #2: If yes to test #1, try downloading and applying the 1.05 patch. Apply it and see if you get any errors either installing or running it.
  • Test #3: If yes to #1 and #2, uninstall completely and then install the basic game again from CD and the apply the this patch. With any luck, you'll be up and runningbut if you aren't then it will help me to isolate the problem.
 
Working

I will relate the details for your reference.

1) Opening and playing v1.00 had no problems.

2) Applied v1.05 patch. This was successful, and I was able to open the game again with no problems perceived.

3) I uninstalled completely, then downloaded the patch from your provided link in your post. This patch worked, and I was able to open v1.06 to begin gameplay.

4) Prior to download, I noticed that the patch file name was the same as I had downloaded earlier. As a precaution, I added an "a" to the file name for save. After download was completed, I checked with the 1.06 patch executable file I had downloaded earlier. File size was the same for both.

I can only speculate from this point, but it seems that my problems revolved around the patch file I downloaded from the Paradox patch list webpage.

Many thanks again for your help. It's been nearly a year, but I've missed being able to play this gem of a game in all this time.

Well that's exceptionally good news, if somewhat mystifying since the link I provided for the 1.06 patch is actually the direct link to Paradox's patch and should be identical to the one you download when you go to Pardox Plaza. Maybe something got shaken loose in the various installs/uninstalls that you went through.

Oh well. The important part is that you're up and running again. :)
