Hello Folks,

so... this morning I noticed that win xp had updated itself, and asked me to reboot. Later I tryed to start EU2 which worked fine until I picked a country and started a game. The weird thing is that the program starts, and that EU2 only crashes after I try to start a game. I also tried loading a save, same result. Then I tryed to start backups, one patched to 1.09, one plain vanilla 1.08. Same crash, same time. So I deinstalled all EU2, and reinstalled it, of course with a lot of reboots in between. Same crash, same time already in vanilla 1.08.

Since it worked fine before the update, I tend to view this as the problem. My EU2 is a legit version I downloaded from gamersgate last week. Maybe there is something wrong with that software, though I doubt it.

Has anyone had a similar problem after the automatic February 2009 Microsoft update? Thx in advance for any feedback.

Napy.

i have this problem to, but I doubt not many people playing this game nowadays, I play it cause the computer don't handle EUIII and the real one is in for reparations. So I guess I have to be patience and play EUIII in a couple of days

Can you uninstall the MS update, to confirm that fixes the problem?

What is the exact nature of the crash? Any errors or messages?

I think I have the same problem. I installed the game again after a long time without playing and it crashes. I didn't have this problem before. Anyone found a solution?

I have the latest XP patch and my eu2 works ok.
Same here.

Does it crash only on starting a game?

This is the same problem I am having. First I thought it was because of AGCEEP so I uninstalled everything and deleted the mod and then reinstalled the game and reinstalled AGCEEP. Same problem. So I went through the same process of uninstalling everything and simply played patched vanilla. Same problem so I did it all again and just played it unpatched with the exact same problem.

It worked fine a few weeks ago and then this happens whenever I try to start up a game as a country.

*Tips hat*

I just got Europa Universalis 2 by mail this morning and am experiencing the same crash as Napoleon79. Tried patching the game but that doesn't change things.

I'm also running Windows XP.

Found a fix that works for me -perhaps you should try it as well, Napy?

Change the name of the EU2 subfolder avi to something else

- I came across this somewhere and, doubtingly, I tried it out and it worked.

Okay, I'm going to try this right now. If it works pal then you are a legend :p

It works! It actually works!

If anyone else is having these problems then do just that, change your avi subfolder name to something else. I just renamed it 'avi1'.

People are still buying EU2? I'm happy to hear that (and *not* just because I'm working on an expansion :D).

Anyway, I'm glad you guys got it to work. For future reference, the self-help guide is quite useful. :)
