Hey all, I recently installed EU2 on a new computer and it doesn't load. The machine's up to specs, I have DirectX 8 and the latest patch. Maybe there's a problem with Windows ME? The CD's fine, seeing as how it works on the old computer fine. What happens is I click on the icon, and nothing happens. The autoplay works and brings up a launcher, but "play" does nothing.

Using North American, version 1.05, Win ME, HP Pavillion 7865, 1200 Mhz processor, 128 MB RAM, 61 GB free, using NVidia Vanta (16 MB video memory), the out-of-box keyboard and mouse, DirectX 8.0, my sound card is a Riptide.

This is freaky... And the AVI thing didn't work.

you should upgrade to DX 8.1 or 9.0 first.
officially, EU2 is supposed to be working with DX 8.1 only (I'm quite sure it would run with 8.0a but I never tested it).

You should also make sure that you've updated the nVidia driver to the most recent version for WinME (v.41.09 released Dec. 3/02) - find it here) since the detonator drivers are often at fault.

Another question or two...

Did you use the default path for the install (C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Europa Universalis 2\ ) or did you install it on a different partition or HD? What drive letter is your CD-ROM? I've seen some problems when the mapping falls outside the normal C:\ or D:\ for the HD and D:\, E:\ or F:\ for the CD.

Yep...that's probably it. Do you have an available drive letter available at around D:\, E:\ or F:\ ? If so, remap the drive to that letter and try again. If not you'll have to do a bit of a "shuffle" of letter assignments (eg. map your current E:\ drive to a new letter and then map the CD-ROM to E:\ which I know works just fine).

This isn't as easy to do in WinME as it now is under Win2k/XP but luckily there's a handly little utility I located to help you. I know that EU2 has no trouble with a letter assignment of D:\ or E:\ so try remapping it to one of those and let me know how it goes.

Edit: note that you'll probably need to do a full uninstall/reinstall to pick up the change. Do the uninstall first, then change the letter assignments, then reinstall. Test it at this point (before patching) and then if that works go ahead and apply the patch and confirm that this is working too.

Excellent! Have fun. :)
