The Game (via Steam on Linux) just won't start 95% of time. Sometimes it works, but most of the time I get this error when starting the game. It starts loading and then crashes:

Can anyone help me. I would not even know where to start to find out the root source of this problem. I searched for this problem but was not able to find anything directly related to my problem. Sorry i f I missed something. Then please post a link for me.

Thank you, every help is appreciated!

I found the file error.log and it tells me:

But I don't know what to make of it.

Just so you know, the game is not officially supported on any Linux distro except Ubuntu, and not on any Intel video system on any OS.

Has it always been like this for you? Or it used to work okay?

On the odd occasion when it does start, does it play and run okay? Or have crashes, hangs or other problems?

Our similar game Crusader Kings 2 is free to play on Steam now, does it have the same problem?

Please attach here your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/settings.txt and pdx_settings.txt .
From your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/logs/ folder, attach here system.log , error.log , exceptions.log

The log looks like it could be a broken game installation or broken/outdated mod. Please try to disable all mods(if you think that you have no mods, look in the playset section of the launcher to make sure, because they might have been installed and activated without your knowledge) and if that doesn't help, you can try to verify the integrity of game files and if that doesn't help, you can try a clean reinstall as described in my guide on reddit about common startup problems with version 1.29.

If that doesn't help, can you post the exception.txt from the newest crash folder in ~/.local/share/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/crashes/ ?

Disclaimer: I'm not working for Paradox. I'm just trying to help people.

Hi there and thank you for the input!

@grotaclas, I already did most of what you suggest: I checked and deactivated the only mod I use (better fonts), I deleted the user file directory in .local/share. I un- and re-installed EU4, I checked integrity of files. I still have to check out your startup thread. Maybe it helps.

@AndrewT, I have not used my new compouter system that much. However, when EU4 starts, the game seems to work fine. I checked out CK2 and it starts without any problems (I tried repeatedly).

With EU4 the problem pattern is somewhat weird: after Computer starts, I can start the game most of the time (I should not use the PC before, so first thing after startup) - but if I exit and try again, startup fails. This seems like a regularity but I have not been able to test this hypothesis rigorously. But generally: the game does not start twice in a row.

I attached the logs you asked for.

Thank you very much, maybe f we find the source. I think the system should be able to handle the game, Mint is even based on Ubuntu.
:)

From that exceptions log I would have said this was a graphics problem. Try disabling the Steam Overlay, any better?

As AndrewT said, this crash is caused by the steam overlay. It started happening after the big update to the steam client a few weeks ago. But it hasn't happened to me recently, so I thought that it was fixed. Is your steam client uptodate?

But the error.log still suggests some broken files. They are not related to your current crash, but they might still cause problems nevertheless.

I checked countrystabilityview.gui and it doesn't even have a "^" in it. Does your version have a "^" in some place? Or is there maybe another countrystabilityview.gui which gets used? You could try find / -name countrystabilityview.gui to find all files with that name on your system

Mhhh... I think, I already had the overlay disabled? My setting is:

Regarding countrystabilityview.gui, I do not find any "^" either

1688764638420.png

I don't see any problem with the code there and I could not find any other countrystabilityview.gui on my PC.
Thanks guys :)

This is weird. Can you try to disable the steam overlay for all games in the main steam settings? Or is the exception.txt maybe from an older crash? The folder has the date and time in it
Weird, yes. I just wanted to deactivate the overlay completely, and it already was! I have attached an exceptions.txt, newley created with the same problem. Does it also indicate the overlay as culprit?

Yes, because the crash is happening in ~/.steam/debian-installation/ubuntu12_64/gameoverlayrenderer.so and not in the eu4 executable itself. You could try what happens if you move that file to a different folder(don't delete it, beause you probably want to move it back if this doesn't help or if you ever need the steam overlay again).

Another thing which you could try would be to start the eu4 executable directly from a teminal by navigating to the installation folder and then using the following command:
Code:
SteamAppId="236850" ./eu4

SteamAppId="236850" ./eu4
Hey @grotaclas this was really helpful! Now I could start the game six times in a row without any problems. The problem must have something to do with the launcher.

Starting in Steam with launcher: Crash (same as before)
Starting command line without launcher: seems fine

Do you know a way to circumvent the launcher but still be able to start the game directly from steam?

In any case: thank you very much. Awesome help! If you or anyone else is interested in more debugging, I can provide more insight/log files if asked for. Otherwise, I would say the problem is solved for me!

PS.: removing gameoverlayrenderer.so also seems a valid remedy. I was able to start the game three times in a row directly from Steam using this approach.
:)

I'm pretty sure that the launcher is not the problem. None of the functions which are in the stacktrace are related to the launcher. Starting from the command line works, because it prevents steam from injecting its overlay and other libraries into the game. Though I have no idea why it is still doing that in your case even if the overlay is disabled. I have a similar setup with an intel integrated graphics chip on Linux and disabling the overlay in the "In Game" section of the steam settings prevents the crash for me. But I was wrong when I said that it was fixed by a steam update. I still get the crash most of the time if I enable the overlay again.

Using fedora, had similar issues, thought it was the latest hotfix, which was supposed to fix CTD issues, causing these issues. Thank you, turning off the overlay instantly fixed it. Dunno why it only affects EU4, but I went from crashes 4 out of 5 times (using the same set of mods and what not) to it just working. Thank you very much.
