Once you get about 50% water on Mars you start to see oceans appear on the planet’s surface. This makes me wonder, if you were to build your colony in an area that appears to fill up with water (such as that giant canyon) would part of the map actually get flooded?
 
In game? No. Though it'll look pretty fun when you're in a canyon with acid rain. Realistically you'd see most starting zones probably go underwater. Most of Mars would be under sea level.
 
It does look rather weird, that the planet view shows your colony in the middle of a world ocean (covering > 50% of the planet), and the only water on the map is the few lakes you built....
