Days after the revolution, Pope Julius IV sent a proposal to the new government to join the Italian Federation. The new Liberal government refused to be dominated by his dictatorship. Julius IV refused to yield and ordered the Italian Federation's military to attack southern Italy. The Italian Reunification War began.

The Fourth Congress of the Greater Sicilian Union convened on April 1, 1936. The Social-Reformists argued for a system closer to that of the Union of Britain. The Anarcho-Syndicalists wanted to maintain the current system. The National-Syndicalists wanted to impose Totalitarian Socialism on the Socialist Republic of Italy. Benito Mussolini held the most convincing arguments for making Italy stronger and got elected as General Secretary of the SRI. Soon after getting elected, however, Mussolini started a campaign to purge his political opponents. Dissent rose all over southern Italy. A new revolution occured and Mussolini was deposed. Elections were held and the Liberal Party gained power, making Enrico de Nicola the first President of the Socialist Republic of Italy.
