Game crash on save (and possible reason why) for Designers Cut Edition

Intel Core2 quad CPU
8GB Ram
Windows Vista 64 SP1

Started the grand campaign, in year 1605. Autosave, regular save, and autosave all worked in 1604. All three crash the games in 1605 with:

Code:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: d:\program files\va..

Here are my dxdiag and log.html. There is no "effect_dbg.txt" in my install directory.

I've tried solution 1 (DEP and disable visual themes) without a change in the behavior.

Have also tried running the game in Windows XP Compat mode without a change in the behavior.

Possible cause of crash found

I have found an action that will cause the save game crash, and if not done, the save action does not cause a crash.

For the save game here:

save7.zip

This game will crash when I have two fleets, each with a single ship that I then merge into a single fleet. Specifically, if you load the game and:

Go to London, you will see two fleets docked.

Gavin Randal with one schooner (Delaware)
Leighton Paddock with one schooner (Opportunity)

If I take Leighton Paddock's schooner and merge it into Gavin Randal's fleet, it works (Leighton Paddock vanishes, Gavin Randal now has two schooners). I can continue playing. However, from this point on, any save will crash to the desktop.

I also tried flipping the merge around (Gavin Randal's schooner into Leighton Paddock's fleet) with the same result.

Another minor item of note is that Gavin Randal was a hired commander (wasn't created in a "new fleet" creation).

Hopefully, this will prove useful.

I can confirm this, I didn't know this was the cause til I read this post but ever since merging 2 fleets of Schooners together in London, every save whether its auto or quick or normal menu save, they all crash the game with a runtime error.
But before the merge the game only crashed rarely.
If you like I can upload my savegame also if it helps.

I can confirm this as well

I have been having this issue as well.

If I have merged two fleets into one fleet, and subsequently given one of my captains the boot, at the next Autosave the game crashes. The game will run just fine with the merged fleet until that Autosave, but sure as sugar, when that 12th month comes around, Bam!

I am disappointed that in the Options, there isn't the option to either toggle the Autosave, or adjust how often it Autosaves. This is relatively common in other RTS games. This would also be a great work-around.

When can we expect to hear from the developers on this issue? It seems it would be relatively easy bug to recreate. I mean, we are all doing the same thing to cause it, and we are all seeing the same runtime error when we do. I don't think it has anything to do with machine specs, but I'll include mine for comparative purposes.

Windows XP MCE
Biostar TA-770
4gb G.Skill DDR2 800mhz
Athlon 64 X2 6400+
EVGA NVidia 9600GT

Yeah I dont think its a hardware or OS issue. But here is my specs for the devs to compare.
Windows Vista 32bit
3.6ghz Pentium 4 (prescott)
2GB DDR memory
ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB

As you can see, they are the total opposite to Bongart's!

Really looking forward to a fix because im getting further into the game now and im gunna need to use the merge feature soon!

The end,finito,siyonara,adios amigos.

Well, I've given the games [both] a good try, but it is crash city even with TWO ship fleets. You cant capture a port with two ships, and anything else other than that intended by the designers is a waste of my valuable time. Sorry, cos I really liked the concept of Privateer.I really would have liked to attack a Fortress with a fleet of SOTL's......sniff.

Glad I found this thread. I have the same problem too. My game crashed after merging at home port then trying to save later. Runtime error message appears. I played the same save and I didn't merge ships. The error did not happen when I tried to save that game and it contuined to play for several more years without the error when I saved again and again. Thanks for looking into it..................

Just to inform. My Directer's Cut vrsion from Steam is crashing on autosave and regular saving after a fleet merger.

Eagerly waiting for the patch!

I have exactly same problem. But i have now merged 2 fleets and now it crash everytime it save, so the game is impossible to play.

That patch have to come out soon!!
Atleast release a patch with that bug-fix alone, so we can continue playing!
