Game Crashes when starting.

I installed HoI2: DD on my computer which has Windows XP. It crashes right when it gets to initializing globals. It sends up the usual message: Hearts of Iron 2 has encountered a problem and must close....

However I used the same CD to install the game on my laptop and it runs fine. So it's probably a problem with my computer, but what could it be?

Rename your avi file to avi.old.

Disable everything that runs in the background that you don't need.

Thanks for you help, but it didn't work. I had the patches, but they did nothing so I uninstalled them a long time ago. I just renamed the file and tried again, but it still wouldn't work.

What exactly are the "globals" in question? Could they play any role in this?

You don't want to uninstall the patches(if that is even possible) even if you don't notice them doing anything, they are.

Yes, it is possible. You don't really uninstall them, you can find the file that contains it within the Paradox Interactive folder and delete it. But what can I do now? I can't play the game now.
