Okay... I've been playing HOI for a few months now. I wake up this morning, planning to play for awhile, but now the game doesn't start. The initial video at the start plays, but as soon as it ends the game seems to close itself and I'm back to my desktop.

What's up?

Did your hardware config change?

Try to rename the avi folder in your HOI folder to something pointless like AVI_Crapped... See if it works then.

HEH? Can you give me a screenshot of that last situation? I don't get what you mean... Meaning I can't visualize it :D You mean the map is *EMPTY*?

I have the same problem, tried this fix, and now the game starts, but I just get a map, but no world map, production numbers etc, so the game is unplayable. Help!
Is this when starting a new game or loading a savegame or both?

No screen shot, as I've reinstalled HOI. But the situation was just getting the map with the sprites on, and nothing else. I can move stuff about, but can't produce or even get to the menu to surrender!

My problem now is twofold. I can't get a new game to start. I've even gone back to my original CD (1.03) and that sometimes doesn't work. Maybe I get one game to start, but the next one and those following fail. Same for saved games.

My second problem is that HOI settings doesn't set the screen size correctly. The display only fills to about 3/4 of my display.

HOI has been ok before. I've been running with 1.05c and CORE. But subequent to a game crash, I can't get it running even after a reinstall.

When I reinstall, I get rid of the HOI directory and registry entries left over afterwards and reboot, but even that doesn't work.

So I suspect that since my original CD doesn't work, maybe something else is left over.

Help! I desperately need to conquer Europe ;)

What are your hardware and OS specs?
This is really more of a Support Forum issue now.

PS I haven't gone through the suggestions in the Self Help Guide yet, so I will do that. I'm also monitoring the threads "HOI hangs" and "Possible Solution to CTD when initialising graphics" threads which look related.

If no joy, I will post back here for more advice.

Thanks,

JEH.

Make sure you update your video drivers, run the DirectX diagnostic, rename your AVI folder, and set your color depth to 16BIT.

I've think I've got to the nub of my problem. I can run in the lowest graphics mode. But if I switch to either of the higher graphics mode with HOI settings I get the problem. Switch back, and it's ok again. I used to able to run in these ther graphics modes, but at least I can run with the reduced screen size.

So it seems that either an upgrade of my display drivers to latest versions, or making some changes to cut down on the resources that the game uses or are being used in the background by other processesmight resolve this.

PS Renaming the AVI folder has an odd effect. I can run in the highest graphics mode, so that my screen is full. But I only get the maps with the sprites on, and no panes on the right for production and world map, or at the bottom for events. The same effect happens if I rename the Bing player exe. Weird

Did you also follow my instruction to set the color depth to 16Bit?

What about the directX diagnostic I asked you to run?

Yep I ran the DirectX diagnostic, but no errors reported. I've done all the self help guide except update my Display drivers which are reported as out of date. However when I haven't been able to install new ones. I'm running ok in 800x600.

It sounds to me as if your video sub system cannot handle the amount of memory required by the game in the higher resolutions.

What are the specs of your video sub system? How are the AGP settings? Do you have integrated graphics (and thus using a portion of main memory, aka unified memory), or a separate graphics solution with it's own RAM?

It might help to increase the AGP aperture size, and/or to increase the amount of system RAM set aside for video, in case you are running a unified memory solution.

JEH.

What is the problem with installing the new drivers?

using a hi spec laptop
Your display size is probably because laptop displays have a certain native resolution and don't look as good at other resolutions. Laptops usually have an option to stretch the display to full-screen (as CRTs do) or show it reduced (i.e. keep actual res at the native) when you run a resolution lower than the native. For example my Dell Inspiron 8200 has a native res of 1600x1200 but I run HoI & EU2 in 1280x1024. I can stretch the display so that it is fullscreen using Fn-F7 key combo [labelled Font]. Once it is switched using these keys it stays set that way (even after rebooting) until switched again.

Well the puzzle is that I used to be able to run HOI at the higher screen resolutions and now I can't. I can't work out what has changed on my laptop to change this.

As for the driver install, it fails saying I am missing some required software, but doesn't tell me what it is
