Hiya!

Yeah, so pretty much what it says on the tin. I have CK2 installed on two computers. One of them is the main one I play it on, but I occasionally use the other when travelling.

However, the secondary one does not update with the mods that I subscribe to from Steam on the primary game, and most of the time, even if it does, the mods cannot be checked so as to activate them.

The issue persists through restarts and reinstallments. I realise this might be a Steam issue and thus not something Paradox can do anything to help fix, but I thought I'd ask anyway just to be sure.

Have a nice evening.

Can you successfully subscribe to mods while on the secondary one, either the duplicates or others?

Has it always been like this, or only since what change or update?

Well, according to Steam, I am subscribed to the same mods on both PCs, and I can succesfully subscribe to mods on both computers.

It started occuring after I had to do a reinstall to solve some issues. I began having some odd issue with CTDs upon finishing loading, but those were my PCs fault, so after I reinstalled the game... I think it must've been about 6 months ago... I unsubscribed to all mods on my secondary and started afresh with only those I still used.

However, several of them do not show up at all, and a few of those that do have no checkbox. That is specifically why I cannot activate some.

It looks like this on my secondary unit. I will try to get a screenshot on the one from my primary pc tomorrow. Sorry for the wait, university was being annoying. I am subscribed to 5 out of 6, and the last one, GoT, I download manually from their external website. I think I'm short about 5 to 7 mods on this list.

Do the two machines have different antivirus apps?

Add steam.exe and ck2game.exe to the exceptions list/whitelist on the AV app of the problem machine.

Hrm... I am going to try that.

I will also, however, apologize and correct myself.

It turns out I am probably not subscribed to the same things on steam on the two pcs. In fact, as far as I can tell, the image above is an accurate representation of those subscribed to on my secondary, while the primary is subscribed to around 15-20, not 5.

Still, the strange issue with the checkbox not appearing persists and is on a mod that is on both versions anyhow.

But mod subscriptions are tied to your Steam account not particular computers. If it is the same Steam account it should have the same mod list available, simple as that!

Yeah, it most certainly does not.

I've been trying to troubleshoot over the weekend, and as far as I can tell, CK2 is the only game this happens to. I do not have this problem with Eu4, nor with the other games I have on both units.

Now, as far as I can tell, Steam downloads the mods, and stores a record of downloading the mods, and the launcher recognises that the mod SHOULD be there.

And Steam does start a so-and-so MB download that it completes. However, no files show up in the mod directory. So that is really the root issue: Files are apparently downloaded, but do not show up anywhere on the computer.

And just to say what I've tried:

Cleared download cache several times, doesn't seem to have done anything whatsoever.

Rebooted steam, didn't work, in fact was also the start of the problem on a different troubleshooting exercise.

Manually deleted mod references in Steam/userdata/ (And so on) through the suggestion of the ck2 wiki. Also didn't do anything.

disclaimer: Just another forum member

Have you actually done the following on both computers ?
check "Enable Steam cloud synch:"
in
Steam - settings - cloud
and
CK2 - properties - updates

..then quit and restart Steam afterwards.

Besides, there is a subscribtion limit of around 50 mods.

Do the two machines have different antivirus apps?

Yes, same antivirus system (AVG, if that matters). As far as I can tell, they have identical settings applied.

I realise this is a very odd issue. Because for one thing, it seems that the syncing is obviously off kilter (I am fairly certain my steam sync settings also match), but that shouldn't really stop me from downloading even if the sync was off.

I agree, either AVG is in the way or something else is wrong, perhaps in Steam.

Yeah...

I mean, really, the non-synchronization thing is a secondary issue that I don't really mind, because my laptop cannot run that much anyhow, but it's vexing all the same.

The real issue is that Steam says the mods download, and they show up in the CK2 launcher, but I cannot check them in the launcher, and the files are not in the mod folder in Documents. It's quite perturbing. I'll try and ask about it on Steam too, see if someone there can come up with an answer.

As your comments weren't quite clear to me i have to ask again regarding my earlier post.
Do you now have both options, for Steam and for CK2 specifically, regarding synching activated on both computers or have you not ?
I think it would help to check that to be sure, before asking anywhere else.
Just my 2cents.

I do, yes.

The issue, as far as I can see, is that Steam does download the mods (It leaves traces in various folders), but they never get put into the "mod" folder, or, indeed, anywhere.

They're downloaded, but then just disappear, somehow. Currently, after trying a full reset of mods, my mod folder is entirely empty. Yet the launcher will place two mods in the listing. None of them can be activated, as there is no data in the mod folder. But clearly both the game and Steam agree that they've been downloaded and should be there.

They just aren't.

Sorry if the following repeats something earlier mentioned, but i'm not going to reread the thread.
More helpless 2cents then. ;)

1) You could check the troubleshooting section here:
https://ck2.paradoxwikis.com/Steam_Workshop#Troubleshooting ,
especially try the last part
If not, you can force a re-download of the mod by looking into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<SteamUser>\ugc for files & folders referencing the mod (for instance 203770_subscriptions.vdf and \referenced\45371260977302539\mod\), deleting them and restarting Steam client.

edit: oh i see you mentioned something in post #8. Well...look again....or not.

2) Have you checked your Steam - Settings - Download options on each computer ?
Maybe there is something causing the issue..

3) Adding both CK2 folders as excepton in your AVG..

That's it.
Now i'm out of ideas.
