Game slows down to a crawl

Does anybody have the same problem as i have? The game is quite fast until 1941-42 when USA and USSR gets into the war. Then the game goes into a crawl. I have a 3.4Ghz P4 cpu, 2GB memory and a ATI 850XT graphics card, so performance should not have been a issue.

Anyone got a tip for me?
 
When the game gets really busy with lots of units, playing on normal speed is often faster than playing on faster speeds, as the AI needs time to make decisions.
If you check the Victoria Tech support forum, there is a FAQ stickied, that address slow downs, everything in there including renaming some files applies equally to HOI2.

Also make sure you have the latest patch.
