Technical Problem

I have a technical problem that I need your help with please.

Game Version & Patch (incl. publisher): CK v1.04

OS & build/SP: Windows XP Personal Edition

Computer, CPU & speed: Intel Pent 4 2.8 GHz

RAM: 1 GB

Free HDD space: 20 GB

Video (brand, model, driver, memory): RADEON 9700 Pro

Sound (brand, model, driver): Creative Audigy

DirectX Version: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Other: Game Worked fine then I did three things. Upgraded Direct X, Updated Video Drivers, Upgraded version of CK. HOI II works fine for me. So do other games.

Okay what happens when you try and start the game?

I get a CTD. I also tried and all other Paradox games do the same thing. They get to the menu where you choose your scenario to start then when you want to start it CTD's.

Note: The exception to this is HOI 2 which i'm a beta tester.

Okay that is helpful, that the Beta works for you and this does not.
Let's stick with CK and get it running first since it has the least variables to the start up.

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.

Yup do the same stuff.

You can try it in 32Bit, it could have been the renaming of the VI folder that cleared the problem up.

Paradox games are optimized for 16BIT so no worries playing the game, 16 BIT is generally more stable a setting for all aplications.

Did as you requested and it loads now. So does this means that the new Direct X 9 ruined 32 bit? If so will it be fixed?
Well, just to add this.

DX 9 definately alters the handling of graphics in a major way when compared to DX 8.1 and lower. I have a whole bunch of DX 7 games that won't even start on my DX 9 config, and that's why I created a separate OS boot with DX 8.1 installed. OTOH, Paradox games (any one of them) don't seem to be affected by this, but games like DiabloII, PGIII, etc definately are.

Ah!
So this is an example of Paradox being ahead of the curve. :)
