I've started looking into getting some new music mods, but I discovered they only exist in the Steam workshop!
I bought the GoG version, and I'm a little pissed that it's locked off like this.

I don't suppose there's any way to download the steam mods without the steam version?

or that I can somehow get a steam key?

Welcome, fellow GoG user.
This is happening all over the Gamer-world. Publisher announce "Full Mod support!" and forget to tell us that it only apply for Steam users.

I do understand the mod-authors and the simplicity to use Workshop. But its sad that Paradox doesn't start implementing some way for none-Steam users to get broad access to Workshop mods. I don't blame the authors, they are doing a fantastic job, making a mediocre game to even better.

For me; I use Nexus and searching Github for mods to this game. I don't mind, to manually install/update/uninstall directly in the Mods-folder.

There's this:

https://mods.paradoxplaza.com/

Not a lot there though, and no "Surviving Mars" yet, only "Stellaris" and "Cities Skylines".

Would be nice to see more. They need to put a little more effort into it.

I can't understand why other games developed by humble studios (say the divine Factorio for example) have implemented in-game mod managers (don't mind if your are Steam, GOG or other platform user) and great companies like Haemimont or Paradox are not able to consider this point. Certainly, it's a pity.

Exactly this.

Also, it'd be nice to get an update on the situation from the developers. We've been asking nicely for quite some time now.

Happily, I can report that we are now serving ~100 mods from PDX Mods to your in-game mod management tool. Additionally, should the fancy strike you, there is tooling included in the windows version that allow you to upload your own stuff as well. Happy modding! :D

I can go to mods.paradoxplaza.com and 'subscribe' to various mods. They don't show up in the game mod manager though. Do I need to download them and place them somewhere?

Hm, I tested this on the PDX version, but that should be identical to the GOG version, and installation should work from the website or from the in-game interface. Just open the "Mod Manager" from the main menu and you should se an "Installed Mods" tab on the top - If you click on that you'll get a list of installed mods and options to enable/disable the mod content.

Now, if you are using the Steam version of the game, you'll be using Steam Workshop mods as the PDX Mods integration is not part of that build. Also note that you need to be logged into your PDX account in order to sync up your chosen mods.

Edit: I fact I'm having some trouble enabling the mods through the in-game GUI for some reason... It does work when enabling the mods through the website though. Slightly odd. I'll ask the game team about it.

You have to be logged in to your PDX account in the GOG/Plaza version of the game. Also for the moment, you cannot enable them from the site when you have the game running (try restarting the game). This is only for the non-Steam versions of the game. Steam Workshop mods are a different service.
