I don't have SM for now but thinking about buying and I have question about colony Habitats.
Which type of colony habitats Surviving Mars have on begin of game (just ones which must be builded under domes from begin or not)?

From videos which I see game give only option to build colony habitats under domes which is not too realistic.

I mean from NASA/Musk and other planes for missions and colonization of Mars its clear that at first stage of colonization colonist will live in basic habitats on ground without protection of domes and then eventually it will be builded in future when number of colonist work robots grow and mining operation been established.

Hi Picard 359,

In SM, when you first land on Mars you have robotic drones to build your basic infrastructure.

Once you are able to build your first dome, you can call colonists to come live there.

You can unlock and build larger domes as the game progresses, but colonists always need to live in a dome (this may change with the upcoming Green Planet, but if so, it will be a late game change, I would assume).

Personally, I think this works well for gameplay purposes, and I'd highly recommend the game.

Thank you for explanation :)

Realistically living space on a Mars colony would be underground. They went with domes because it looks good. This is one of those cases of a game choosing something because it makes a better game.

That said, I’d love a dome ‘skin’ that is actually a low mound of dirt, with everyone safely underground. No mechanical difference whatsoever, just skin the domes and tunnels to look like they’re covered in dirt.
