I'm wondering if the new 1.04 patch has been affecting anyone else's sytems. I only ask because i refmormatted my system after having some problems with it. It worked great after the reformat...then i put HoI back on, and downloaded the patch. Now i'm getting all the same errors as before. As someone who LOVES this game, i'm quite troubled by this.

Now, my machine is a bit of a dinosaur, but it has all the minimum requirements for the game, and as you may have seen from my posts, had no trouble running the game at all for months. I have a Pentium II 400 mhz processor, 128 MB Ram, all the soundcard and video card requirements, etc., ant windows 98 [2nd edition]

Hearts of Iron will load up as far as "Initializing Sounds" and then crash. Europa Universalis 2, un-modded will not load up at all.

Help me, Obi-wan....you're my only hope

Thanks,
the technophobe

First thing to try is always renaming the AVI folder to AVI_back.

The bink player is really the only thing that would effect other programs.

unfortunately....

Unfortunately, i already tried that trick...no dice.

Have you turned off music in both games? I run on a P2-300 laptop with Win98SE and the music seems to cause a significant slowdown. Also, I noticed a major improvement in performance when I increased RAM from 128MB (even with nothing running in the background). Given the 'initializing sounds' before the crash you might try reinstalling your sound card drivers.

OK...

jdrou, do you mean just shutting off the music in-game? I used to run it like that anyway, when it worked. SOundcard is a possibility, i'll have to check that out.

I have just finished my second reformat of the week. THings are running totally smoothly. SO i've installed HoI again and am currently downloading the new patch. Is there a way to disable sounds out of game? for instance, the way i disabled the avi? DOes the game look for Ride of the Valkyries automatically, is it required to start the game [silly question, but comptuers are still mystical boxes to me].

Also, i just started up the game, un-patched, and had no trouble getting to the main menu. I didn't go any further [probably should], as i immediately went to get the patch.

Thanks for all your help; this may be a problem betweent he chair and the keyboard ;-)

Both EU2 and HoI use a separate program to turn music on/off and change video resolution. Something like EU2_settings.exe and HoI_settings.exe. I think the installer puts shortcuts to them on the startmenu along with the shortcut to the game itself.

That will only turn off the music though, not the sound!

::grumbling::

OK, after testing out the un-patched game, it worked fine...well it worked as well as it works; we all know WHY they MADE patches, right?

SO i download patch 1.04 It downloads a LOT quicker than i remember, but ai attribute that to a fresh harddrive. I go to install it.

It says it cannot install the patch because i am running an incomplete or unoriginal version of the game. WHAT!? THis si the same CD i bought in November! THe same version of the game that 1.04 installed on fine a month ago when it was released.

SO....uninstall the game and try again.

As for sound, IS there a way to disable sound out of game? I won't miss it as i usually have the radio or a sibling in the background anyway. I play for the tactical aspects, not the multimedia presentation :)

again!

OK, full uninstall, full reinstall, install the patch:

C:\Program Files\strategy first\Hearts of Iron\HOI.exe is not a valid previous version and could not be upgraded

HOW is this possible? How is it remedied?

::reaching for a hammer::

Is that where you installed the game?
Have you ever installed to any other directory?

that's the only place

You mentioned getting errors after DL the patch, the same ones you were getting before reformatting.
Can you ellaborate, what kind of errors?

the errors

These stopped after my latest reformat [about 18 hours ago]

COuld Not find a required DLL: XOR.DLL

Illegal operations:

SysCfg32
Wupdate
Msgsrv32
5py

I don't know much about computers, but those look like Windows errors to me. As i said, they have not occured this time around, but the "not a valid previous version" error is new.

Also, it took three tries to DL the patch fully, as it would finish downloading and it would be missing half a meg of what thesetup was looking for. So i'd delete, try again.

That's today's mess, anyway.

Did you rename the avi folder before installing the patch? I think that would cause this.

is that spy ware?

as for the other you can try jdrou's suggestion.

I've tried installingthe patch with avi and avi_back....same results.

Either your game is corrupt on the HD or the patch is corrupted during DL.

You did not edit the game/ or files/ or install any mods right.

that's right

clean install, no mods, no additions, nothing. SO......start over again? Any ideas if THAT doesn't work?

Make sure you follow the unistall instructions. you can find them in the self help thread, #1 is a hotlink to them.

Exasperated

OK, after my 3rd reformat of the week, i am officially frustrated. I installed HoI again, before any other programs. Did not change the name of the avi folder. Downloaded the patch fresh. Installed the patch. Same error:

C:\Program Files\strategy first\Hearts of Iron\HOI.exe is not a valid previous version and could not be upgraded

So...should i go back to Civ3? [please say no]
