Oh man, the computer almost flew across the room this time. Last night, 1.03b worked fine. Today, i get teh same crash in the loading screen when it gets to 'Initializing Graphics.' Avi folder has been renamed, but i tried it before i renamed it...same problem. What the heck is happening!?

Try setting the operating system resolution at 800x 600 16 bit.
Also run Euconfig and set the game resolution at 800x600.
Keep the AVI folder renamed.

Well, now it won't get past "Initializing Sounds." It just sits, tehre, no harddrive activity, just gets stuck looking for the card, i guess. Kinda strange.
What version of DirextX are you running?

Strangely enough, i've just reformatted again for a seperate issue, so nothing is installed. Is there some sort of checklist i can go through before i try again?

Well, after reformatting, you need to first, get your internet working, then update your operating system, Video card and sound card to the latest drivers.

for some reason today, explorer stopped working, which lead to me being unable to use my desktop..SO, in a fit of rage, i reformatted because i KNEW it would work. THe new video card driver requires directX 8.0 or higher...if i install the game and put on 8.1,t aht should be fine, right? or should i DL 8.0 from microsoft, install the new driver, and THEN install HoI?
ANd the soundcard driver seems to be a pain int he a$$. DO i really need to upgrade it? I'll probably disable it while playing the game anyway.
And the windows upgrade...how necissary is it? My system seems to be running quite smoothly without it....this aftenoons explorer failure not withstanding.

Definately install all the upgrades available for your operating system, It is after all quite dated.
Install the 8.1 it will be backward compatible.

OK, i'm at my wits' end. I've been spending all the time i have since i can't run HoI--or any other program really--looking for a new computer. I get some new errors now when i startup:

The new video card driver i downloaded also performs an illegal action when i try to run it, so that has be just thrilled. I now keep a hammer close by the computer so it knows i'm done screwing around.
Also, my browser is a total mess, getting 404 errors allt he time when i try to find ANY website, even my [few] cached sites. I was told this is some sort of DNS problem and that my ISP would provide me with the numbers, but they said they could not. THis is the REAL reason i started reformatting two weeks ago, and after my 5th reformat int hose two weeks today, i'm just about ready to see what a motherboard tastes like.
THis is the help i'll request. Feel free to tell me to fly away with my screwy system. WHere can i definitely find the drivers for my hardware that will WORK after i download it? Why is no one else having these problems? and, just for fun, where can i get a 2.4 ghz processor, 512MB, 120GB harddrive machine for under $50 [American]?

Obviously since you are having trouble with other programs as well, this is not HOI related.
I would say you have a bad Harddrive or memory or motherboard.
Hard to tell at a distance.
As for under $50, well you would have to find a guy selling them out of the back of his van in some dark alley.

OK, we can probably close this thread after this, because i'm just fed up. But I loaded the game, patched to 1.03B and the game worked fine. Tried to patch to 1.04, got the same error [not valid previous version], and now it won't run in 1.03b. I get to the initializing graphics part and CTD. I think i could have lived with 1.03b until 1.05. My question is, what is happening between my system and 1.04? THere is definitely some incompatibility that did not exist before!

Do a fresh install then just 1.03b and it should work for you.
Putting an old patch on the 1.04 would cause problems.
