I think it only fires if you have chosen Meritocracy over Aristocracy. Also, crime buildings might have an effect on it?

Certain crimes, immoral business IIRC, increases the chance for a stock market crash. It doesn't seem to scale with country size however, so if you're a major, you'd better keep some police spendings.

You can counter it by cheating, event 356 IIRC gives you 10% rich tax eff.

Yes, but having lots of crime increases the chance of it occuring, methinks.

That's right - crime and meritocracy = stock market crash. Of course, meritocracy is still the better choice, IMHO, since it converts aristocrats to capitalists. :)

it really depends on your country and playingstyle wheter meritocracy is better. if your income from aristo-boosted-colonial posessions is high, the -50% income malus for capitalists isnt that much, and the conversion of the aristos to capitalists is an ambivalent matter anyway. also you get 1,25 times more diplomats, and additional claims (i think). there is some more IIRC.

since you barely cant prevent the stock market crashes your economy will most likely be hit once or twice even with full crime fighting, thus badly crippling your economy

I know this thread is a little old...but I noticed something in the "economic events" file that I wasnt certain has been brought up before. The trigger for Stock Market Crash is

"local_flag = { name = loc_flg_meritocracy value = 1 }
technology = 3002"

However, the trigger for Stock Market Hausse is

"invention = 3002"

Now, a cursory look at the Commerce inventions file says that there is no invention "3002". There is, however, a technology "3002" (Stock Exchange).

I dont know the game mechanics that well...but if there was no "invention 3002", then wouldn't Stock Market Hausse not trigger?

Regards,

That actually looks like a bug so hopefully it will get fixed.

I've actually gotten stock market crash 3 times in one year once. It seems to me it should only ever trigger once, at least as a permanent event. Something that lowers taxes for a year, OTOH, would be fine, and somewhat realistic.

Yes, it would be nice if there was more variety in the random events triggering (would require an event counter var). In my current game, during elections, I have always received at least one, sometimes two, "Minority Issues' random event. Getting old. Also, 'Political Scandal'. Meanwhile, I have only had one 'pacifist-anti-war' event and only one 'moralism-atheism-' event. That in about 5-6 elections. So, where is the 'pro-military-jingo' events? (Was Prussia, and conservative at the time .. now, liberals are in power .. ick)' :confused:

As for the stock market, it keeps triggering. Has not happened in this game - yet. However, certain events seem to trigger multiple times in the same game. In some games, 'factory destroyed' - again and agin (twice so far, no three .. cement, machine parts, and a paper now). Also, I really HATE (loathe, view with disgust, detest, abhor, dislike greatly) the capitalists-to-clerks thingy. Strange, how these 'random' events occur in cycles for the same event. :(

btw, there are no good random events (8 points research is it .. all the others usually make you pay). 1000 cash when I am making 700k a year is a drop in the bucket. To get the arms/ammo you have to annihilate relations with a neighbor. And, of course, 33% of a current stockpile lost. :mad:

Note: certain late-techs remove the chances for some bad events :rolleyes: :)

Guess these events simulate the time period of the game. The events, themselves, are not fun. If I were to make a game, it would have a few nice events. ;) :D :p
