When i want to join an alliance i can do that by overloading the
alliance-leader with generous gifts. But how do i recognize them?
By the small lightning bolts on the political-map? These bolts are not always there.......
I want every penny well spend on the right country.

Yes, but in a war, isn't the alliance leader the one who called in his allies? That would be either the nation doing the DoW or the one that got DoW'ed?

I got dragged into (willingly of course :D ) a war with France, Turkey, and Algiers. My Ally P-L DoWed on Turkey and asked me to join. I thought France was the Alliance leader so when TUrkey offered 3 provinces for peace, I accepted. Then I noticed that the 4 provinces of France I had taken over plus the one in ALgiers no longer flew my flag:( I had planned on accepted separate peace with each enemy nation so as to maximize the number of provinces I received, but I only got 3 Turkish provinces and can't get war with France or Algiers for another 5 years.

No highlights for me

Well my relations are -200 with Austria, Bohemia, Wurtenberg and Hungary. Join alliance is not hightlighted with any of these country's.
The first one mentioned in 3 of these country's is the Alliance leader i guess. When you check the alliance leader himself you could choose the wrong country to give yr money to, the first one mentioned is Bohemia ........

Yes, actually each time I try to "bribe" the leader I check the country appearing first in the list of allies (for at least two countries, since if I happened to check the leader first, the first ally appearing on the list would be another country). Also, I believe the first name appearing in the "aliance" page of the archives is the leader.

By the way, I find annoying that you can't make the alliance appearing clearly on the map with different colours (or perhaps you can and I didn't find how) There's symbols appearing under the crowns, of course, but it isn't that clear...

Obviously u need to double check :D

To be able to join an alliance, you have to have a fairly good relation with the other alliance members too. It doesn't help bribibg only the alliance leader, you have to bribe the others too.

At least in IGC/RealEU my rule of thumb is minimum +20 for accepting a Royal Marriage; minimum of +75 to try to get him to join an alliance with you. Having an RM seems to help get an alliance, having a permanent CB means you need even higher + diplomacy factor for a positive response. For instance, as England I regularly get RMs and alliances with Protestant Northern German states like Hannover, Hessia, Pommerania, Brandenburg with diplomatic factors of +21 to +60. With Scotland, I couldn't even get a RM until my diplomatic rating with her was +150, I assume because we have permanent CBs with each other in the IGC.

Don't discount negative relations.

There is some range -15 to +20 or thereabouts that RM is impossible. You can RM with countries that are highly negative to you (and have CB) - I have RM'ed with (as England) in various games, France Scotland, Spain with very negative ratings and the other country having a CB.

In terms of alliances, I have allied with countries with high negative ratings with me - not often. This is one aspect of the AI that might be very good. I think if you look at a prospective alliance partner and see its relationship to other countries, it might find you attractive, even though it hates you, since it is unaligned, adjacent to a major, which it does not like anyway, and you hate that major...

*- +20 + and between -5 and -150 (but be carefull with rounding errors, 20 eg might be only 19,756782, which will fail every time)

minimum of +75 to try to get him to join an alliance with you.

*- You can often create Alliances even at negativ relations, but the higher the more likely you are to succede.

Countries really fear having to stand alone. I've seen a Spanish-Persian allaince quite a few times

No, you can have -200 with others alliance members. I, as England, has good relation with Poland, but -200 against France. Poland acepted me as an alliance member.
