I bought Surviving Mars from GOG on Monday, August 6. I've put about 24 hours into it so far and it's pretty fun.

I've been looking into mods for it and it seems most of the mods are on Steam and can't be obtained elsewhere or are not updated often elsewhere. I tried manually downloading a mod using Steamcmd and it seems that option is disabled... so it seems I have a few potential options.

  • Paradox Interactive / Haemimont Games flips the switch that allows one to manually download mods from Steam (I'm not sure why this option isn't enabled already.)
  • I obtain a Steam key for the game since I bought it from GOG. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this, though. Any thoughts on who I would contact and ask if I could get a Steam key so I can get Steam community mods?
  • I somehow get a refund for the game from GOG even though I have 24h18m of playtime listed in the Galaxy launcher and rebuy the game on Steam
  • ???
I should have done some research on this before I bought it from GOG but I wasn't aware just how many mods for it were on Steam and didn't seem to be obtainable elsewhere...

Any help or advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

hm, it looks like the Devs/Paradox could help here.

The game that this item belongs too does not allow downloading of its items...BUMMER!
The reason not to do it could be to protect the Mods/Authors so they don't show up on nexus.

If you have a friend who has SM on steam he could copy it for you.

Welp. I contacted Paradox support about this, and he had this to say:
It's not possible to exchange a GoG key for a Steam key nor are Steam mods compatible with the GoG version of the game. If you want a Steam version you will have to buy a Steam copy of the game I'm afraid.

.. what. Can anyone confirm if that's true or not? Why would they not be compatible?

edit: I just took advantage of the Steam <2 hour refund policy to test this for myself, and Steam mods for Surviving Mars work just fine with the GoG version. Why would the support guy give me false info?

Hello!

I bought Surviving Mars on Steam. If you have Google Drive or anything of this sort, I could
make a copy of the mod files and share them with you.

Let me know!
Cheers!
Might be worthwhile talking to the people who made the mods to see if they are happy with you distributing them like that.

Seems like the decent thing to do.

Hello,

What i had in mind was to access the files in my own computer in the Surviving Mars game folder, so I wouldn't have to disturb anyone.

Cheers

There are ways to download steam workshop items. If you have a friend who has a steam version, they can just send you the file. Once you get access to a mod, just post it in your %appdata%/surviving Mars/mods folder and they will more than likely work. It's all the same code once launched, after all.

It's a bit frustrating that this isn't directly integrated, but Steam and GoG are rivals, and Steam has no real incentive to allow GoG access to their workshop, so I really doubt it's going to change any time soon.

Those of us who play on GOG paid the same price as Steam users. And, modding was a major selling point for this game. Thus, it's entirely unacceptable that Paradox hasn't fixed this problem. If a small studio like Wube can get a mod distribution platform built into Factorio, then a much larger publisher like Paradox has no real excuse for not doing the same.

In the mean time, I guess we can all download illegally copied mods from a random Russian website.

Agreed, that is a lovely feature that Factorio has. In addition, the tModLoader extension for Terraria also has a mod browser/downloader/updater..

edit: heh. I wonder if we'll see a third party Surviving Mars mods site before Paradox / the SM devs get around to doing it. Oh wait, there already is one, of a sort. Two, actually. That skymods site, and nexus. Would be nice to have a dedicated thing, though.. like the existing 'mod browser' ingame that isn't functional yet.

How is it illegal?

Eh, maybe unauthorized is a better term. But, the point is that those mods are rehosted without permission from the original mod authors. It's not the best way to do things.
I'm guessing this isn't enough of a disclaimer to offset that, then?
the site in question's about page said:
This site will help you to get certain items for games if you can’t get them on Steam Workshop for some reasons.

If you are an author of the mod and you think that your works should not be here, just inform
us via this email and we’ll delete them as soon as it’s possible. However, we do not pretend to authorship and always post a link to original author’s page.

Not really, no. That website is still hosting mods without asking the authors. They would have to "opt out", which they could only do if they knew about the website. I'd imagine that most don't.

I'm guessing some mod authors are really particular about that sort of thing. I've only made a few mods for a few different games but if the redistributor put a link to the original page, I don't think I'd have a problem with it. Especially if they couldn't get the mod any other way. (Steam mods only for steam games, but the game can be gotten elsewhere, etc.)

It's a double sided coin; 1) If a Modder creates on commission and finds their stuff on a free site, Damn strait they should retaliate.
2) If a Modder creates for public use and finds their work being sold somewhere they should retaliate too.

Most Modders have notifications that their work can be used elsewhere with restrictions mostly give due credit and don't sell my work as your own. While it is good etiquete to contact them first most have already given restricted permission to host un modified versions of their work with a link to their home site. Furthermore if you don't get files or have a home site to reference to there's no guarantee your files are updated to the latest patches and may not work or worse crash your game.

It's quite disappointing that we're still talking about how to find some mods on random websites since we still can't get Steam mods for the GOG version of the game.

I found a Steam mod redistribution site that has all of the ones I was looking for. Each mod entry gives credit to the original author and has a link to the relevant Steam mod page. In addition, the guy has a specific disclaimer that he will take down any mods if the authors ask him to.

That site wants me to download some downloader. It also redirects twice to to different sites for downloading... Seems sketchy.
