Well, I´m not sure if it is a bug but, I don´t know what to make out of it otherwise, I play the Swedish version 1.07b.
The thing is that I have been elected Emperor of the HRE, nothing strange there, but I play as England. How could that happen? I own nothing on the continent, having lost Calais a few years ago and I have not vassilized anybody. (I have a save game as evidence)

You are probably one of the only 'major powers' that has stayed out of wars of aggressions and have made some diplomatic moves. The electors of the HRE elect the catholic monark that has the best total relation to all the countries within the HRE (or was it merely the electors?)

I know that, but I am not supposed to own a province within the HRE, to become Emperor of it?

I think the manual tells you that you have to own a province within the HRE, but it's not, though greatly done and really good looking, always 100% right.

In my game the King of Hungary has been elected several times as the Emperor of HRE, and I don't think that Hungary owns any provinces in HRE.

Not 100% sure on this one

Is Genoa part of the HRE? If not, I have heard reports of the ruler of Genoa being elected to the Emperor position. I have also heard of the French king gaining the position and I do not think they have territory in the HRE either.

Of course, I could be wrong.

No it's not, it belong to S Europe, just as Savoia.
HRE provinces are:
Alsace
Anhalt
Ansbach
Baden
Bavaria
Brandenburg
Bremen
Cologne
Danzig
Eastern Pommerania
Eastern Prussia
Hannover
Hessen
Holstein
Kleves
Kustrin
Lorraine
Magdeburg
Mainz
Mecklenburg
Memel
Munster
Oldenburg
Pfalz
Saxony
Silesia
Sudeten
Thuringen
Western Pommerania
Western Prussia
Wurtemburg

I was refering to historical maps. In the game, however, Genoa is not a part of HRE.

Don't worry, it's an easy misstake to make. You have to look in the Province.csv to know exactly where these lines are drawn. There really should be a text ingame that tells exactly what Region and Area a province belngs to, there certainly would be space for it in the 'hover over a province' text.

Personally I've printed a 14 page, ultrasmall text, referenclist of this just to be able to check in dubious cases. You really shouldn't have to do this.

Huszics, you're very right about what you say. But the HRE provinces are a bit special, since this is somewhat a reliogious matter.

When in a province, you can click on the symbol of their religion, and you will be transported to the religious map. There you will see a red boarder line around all the provinces belonging to HRE in the game.

But I wonder why all the Italian provinces that belonged to HRE in those days are not a part of HRE in the game. Or are all my historical maps incorrect?

I think the confusion on HRE members has to do with the HRE boundary changing over time. I have looked at a few of my history book Maps and this what I found:

1454- Frorence, Genoa, Siena, Modena, Milan, Savoy, Lorraine, Franche Comte' and the whole Netherlands are in HRE

1519- above still the situation

1609- United Provences are out of HRE

1648- Northern Italy, and Swiss are out

1795 The Spanish Netherlands and all French territories are out

1806 THE END of HRE

Does anyone have the definitive answer regarding provinces leaving (or entering) the HRE? It seems that when the German provinces start converting to Protestant that they're still considered part of the HRE so the Emperor can still move through them. Is this something that just hasn't been implemented?
