The HRE stem from the Papal coronation of Charlemagne in Rome, doesn't it? That's where the title comes from. His son, Louis the Pious, held the empire united, but divided it between his three sons Lothar, Pippin and Louis in 817. See The Ordinance of Louis the Pious Division of the Empire of the Year 817.

imagine if Lous the Pious had followed Roman Law instead of Salic Law when the inheritance of the empire happened. No split.

Too bad we won't be able to try that in the game. Hopefully we can try to make the HRE a 'unified' and powerful entity

It was by far the most powerful state in western Europe at Henry III's death (1056). At CK start, it still is except that Henry IV's minority, which has just ended (1066), gave the princes a taste of greater independence in Germany and the pope a chance to raise his head in Italy.

Stormclouds gather during the Saxon Revolt (1070s), which is crushed by Henry IV at the Battle of the Unstrut (1075). However, the storm doesnt break until the Investiture Conflict, at which point many princes seize the chance to revolt. Several pitched battles follow in Germany until Godfrey IV turns Henry's tactical defeat on the Elster into a strategic victory by killing the Anti-king in battle (1080).

Henry then invaded Italy, smashed Matilda's army (1080), deprived her of Tuscany (1081), and finally captured Rome (1084). Although the Normans "rescued" the pope, the devestation they caused in Rome and the death of Guiscard (1085) left Henry in the ascendant in Italy. Upon his return to Germany, he was at the height of success.

So 1066 definitely isnt too late to restore imperial fortunes. ;)
