Good work, Hartmann. You guys are amazing. IMO Paradox should hire you right away... ;-)

I will try to play as Portugal in the IGC (not much free time, though...).
I think that you did not change Portugal settings very much (although at least some of the 'explorer' names could improve). Do you have any experience at all on Portugal + IGC ?

Hartmann and Doomdark,
Just out of curiosity are you planning in the next version of the IGC to make any improvements to England so that it doesn't collapse when played by the AI?

Well, they should do (mostly) fine now in IGC 1.7 already. :)

IGC 1.7 rocks even in MP!!

Last night we were playing a 3 MP game for some 40 years. No crashes, no glitches, no time for breaks...

IGC 1.7 combined with the AI/diplo improvements of patch 1.08 is an awesome cocktail.

Excellent work again, IGC dudes!! Gracias.

I suggested earlier to remove the French COT at the start to even it up a bit but that seemed impossible due to the fact Euopean COTs are hardcoded in the game. But what about giving England its own COT at the start ? I'm xure they could use the 60 ducats a year to battle the French, who alreday get those 60 ducats. It wasn't like England was a commercial wasteland then.

COT Duplication

Hi,

I've noticed in the regular 1492.inc file (and in the IGC equivalents) that there are some duplicated merchants in the COTs. Namely, Flanders has two English merchants (one level 4, and one level 2), while Cadiz has two Spanish merchants (level 3 and level 1, if I remember correctly). When playing, it seems the game uses the last of the two merchants on the COT line (which is also the lower). Is this a bug (ie, is one of the duplicates supposed to belong to another country?) or did the designers decide to change the level of the two merchants and forgot to remove the old ones?

Yes. Read the readme that came with the 1.7c patch. You have to add this line in the list of countries in the Config/Text file: SPR;Ragusa;X;X;X;X;X;X;X;X;X;X

Because so many people seem to miss the instructions in the readme or have problems to follow them correctly, Doomie has written a little program, which will do these things for You in the next IGC. :)

Comments on the Baltic Region

Recently took a quick look at the IGC, and have a couple of comments/suggestions regarding the situation in the Baltic.

If Holstein is to be maintained as a seperate state (and I must say that I find this is a highly debatable point) they should be a Danish vassal with positive relations with Denmark. This best reflects the substantial control that the Danish crown exerted over this region (many, many Danish Kings were Dukes of Slesvig/Holstein).

I would maintain a CB shield on Holstein. With Hostein a vassal, this should still maintain play balance.

Move the Copenhagen COT to Skaane, and remove the Stockholm COT. You mention how debatable the Stockholm COT is. Swedish trade only really grew after the conquest of Skaane broke the Danish control of the Oeresund tolls - having only the 1 scandinavian COT in Skaane reflects this economic control that Denmark had at the start of the game, and avoids crowding Scandinavia with too many COTs.

I would return Swedish military tech to lvl 0. It is really not a big deal now (due to slower tech advancements for those that are ahead), and it does better reflect the peasant rebellions which is what the Swedish revolts mostly were until well into the 1500s. It's hard enough battling the Swedish armies for Denmark as it is.

Remove Norway as an independent nation. The independence movements in Norway only gathered impetus AFTER Denmark gave them over to Sweden in 1814 and the likelihood of an independent Norway being created in this period were microscopic (this is perhaps the area were it becomes most apparent that the game is made in Sweden ;)).

That's my 250d...

I agree wholehearedly, except on the question of Swedish land tech. Also, I do not like that Swedish vassalage to Denmark seems to result in Sweden gaining its national territories not until the 1600's, which means that Sweden never plays the important role in northern Germany it did for much of this period. Therefore, I have gotten rid of it, and instead given them a royal marriage, and MA expiring in 1500, plus poor relations. This has increased warfare between Denmark and Sweden.

Comments on land tech:
Historically, it was not through their military victories that the Swedish won their independence - it was primarily Danish occupation in the conflict between nobles and King (Christian II was deposed in 1523) that distracted Danish efforts and the war was only brought to a favorable end through the mediation and support of Lubeck. (Interestingly enough, Denmark AND Sweden later warred together against Lubeck in 1534...)

Historically, Sweden had only diplomatically annexed Estonia by 1600. Sweden's expansion didn't really start until the era of Gustaf II, so the current setup in the game would seem to reflect this situation quite well.
