I have been playing KC for some short while now, I am encountering strange problem:

I have come to 1224 and the Mongols have arrived. I am facing sudden freezing of the game i.e. the game is not responsing at all. In Windows Task Manager the application is indicated as "Not Responding". I am using a machine with following configuration:

OS: Win 2k SP4
Memory: 256 MB
Video Memory: 16 MB
HDD: 40 GB
Other Application: McAfee Antivirus 8.1

Did it happen to anybody? If yes could anyone provide some work around? The saved games themselves are loading however after the freeze. Has the antivirus got anything to do with it? Well I dont Know

Well you are running with very little memory.
I would shut the antivirus down, those things are horrible for causing conflicts.

What patch version of the game are you playing?

Some other stuff to try:

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

Well, I tried to reduce the system overheads as much as possible, however, the game froze. This time I noticed that the CPU usage has gone to 99% for the CK application and the 189,704 KB. Is that normal? If so I guess I have upgrade the memory

What patch are you using?

I am asking what patch you are using now.

Sorry, I missed the patch info in post 5.

I would go ahead and install the beta patch, I know there was some problems with one of the 1.4 versions. But it could just be a memory problem.

Well, I guess you are correct. I personally also sustect the memory shortage. When I started the games or if I start a new game, the game works fine. I guess the memory requirement of the game goes up progressively, so at some point the memory shortage is significant. I plan to upgrade the RAM to 2GB shortly and then see the result.

However, Castellon, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss another issue that I am facing. I have posted the issue before but I will mention it here as it is a persistent one.

Whenever I install the game, the installer does not exit properly. I see the installer as an running application in my task bar and it does not maximize. This happens when I install the game and press the 'finish' button. What I am forced to do is then to go to system manager and terminate the process. The machine does not become unstable. I should also mention that I have always installed the DirectX 7 version from the installer as it provided the facility.

Subsequently to that I cannot uninstall the game, neither can I repair it. I have tried many ways but re-installation/un-installtion does not work. The un-installation/repair wizard comes up but does not perform any operation.

I have McAfee running in the background when I perform the initial installtion. Could that be the problem why the installer cannot exit properly? I have other Paradox games (HoI II and Two Thrones), none of them give such a problem. Could you please advice.

Well in general you should never ever think about down grading your DirectX.

I am really suprised you say the version of DX on the CD is DX7, that is very old.

The direct X you should have on your system is 9.0C

In general you always want the latest version.

Regarding your virus protection.

Well those programs are horrible and notorious for causing problems with installs and the running of games.

Castellon, for everybodies benefit, I thought I would relate the latest findings on the problem. The freeze was definitely due to memory shortage, in fact increasing the virtual memory did not make much of difference. I went ahead and put 2GB RAM and now the game works absolutely smooth without crashes. In addition, I would also mention that the anomalous behaviour of the installer was due to the antivirus software, I loaded the game on my new machine without the antivirus and the installer exitited normally.

Glad it worked out.
