Hi All!

I have a problem. In 1.06 Initializing Graphics takes at least twice than in 1.05. I don't know why. Could it be in connection with that I've recently reformatted my HD and reinstalled Win 98 to Win 98 SE?

My system specs are: P 700, 384 MB RAM, NVidia TNT 2 Aladdin video card with 32 MB RAM (DirectX 8.1 only show 24 MB, I don't know why that is either  ).

So, please help, have you got any advice? Thank you in advance.

I noticed that it got slower too... not twice as slow, but a bit slower. But then my machine is much crappier than yours.:)

You DO need to get WinXP ;)

It does now "think" 15 seconds before it starts with the intro-movies is the only difference since 1.05. The game initializes just as fast as previously for me.

There are quite a few graphics additions to this patch so it will almost certainly take longer to load. On the other hand it shouldn't be double the time. How much free drive space do you have? Are you sure you've got the most recent drivers?

Oh...and XP wouldn't be a bad idea. ;) :p :D

Not to mention the potential for fragmentation...

I have >15 GB free disk space, should be enough. :) And the most recent video drivers.

Thank you for all pieces of advice, I've upgraded to Windows 2000 and it seem to run a bit faster.

However don't you accidentally know why my video RAM (NVidia Aladdin TNT2 with the most recent - 41.09 - drivers) is reported only 24 MB which should actually be 32 MB? Maybe it's in connection with my EU 2 1.06 performace problem.

Many thanks.

Thats clearly is a directX issue. Ye should download DirectX 9, get it at Microsoft.com. This could indeed be the problem, since i suppose EU2 uses DirectX too.

Renew ye DirectX, thats the conclusion :)

Oh, and you do have alot of space, but if you dont have enough rpm (how fast your HD is), its no use :). I dont think its your HD though...

Thank you for caring. It's definitely not my HD, since it worked correctly before formatting and reinstalling.

As for my video RAM misreport, I downloaded DirectX 9.0, still only 24 MB reported... :( Why is that?

I would contact the tech support people for your card and discuss it with them, they may have a solution for you.

I think the first thing I'd do is uninstall the video drivers all together, power down, and then cold reboot and reinstall the drivers. This might resolve the error in vRAM reporting which could, in turn, easily be related to the problem you're having - something to do with the on board handling of the card. Worth considering anyway...

I did, no change. :( Thanks for your help, could you continue giving some further useful hints?

Okay...next request for you. Could you run the DirectX diagnostics tool for me and post the results...

Start-->Run-->dxdiag.exe

Run each of the tests (I know you have already, but do it once more please) and then use the "Save all information" function to save a txt file of the results plus entire system/driver specs. Then open the txt file and past the results here since something there may provide me with a clue. It's a relatively long txt file but don't worry about posting it...it will probably contain the answer somewhere.

Just out of curiosity. My old TNT2 vid board shows an identification upon a cold boot, which also lists the actual amount of VRAM present. It remains visible for about 2 seconds, before the normal POST continues.

If that is also the case for your TNT board, check what it reports as the amount of RAM. Maybe one of the chips broke down.

Good idea. IIRC there's also a "visible" switch on boot that will show you this but I haven't the faintest recollection as to what it is.

Does Windows itself see the full 32MB vRAM in Control Panel-->System-->Properties (I think that's what the path was in Win98)?

Hi!

Thank you all for every useful pieces of advice.
I'm sorry for inconvenience, but I took a look on the FAQ of the manufacturer of my motherboard and it explains somethings obscurely why the OS recognizes only 24 MB regardless the actual value, but the point is that I'm aware of that it works OK.
However, the BIOS as startup also reports 32 MB, so everything OK.
Many thanks once again for your help.

So everything's more or less fine now? Cool! Glad we could help.
