I'm curious since I'm wanting to make a mod that gives every species their own appropriate pirate ships for their shipset since right now it seems like the same omnipresent pirate faction is harassing every species since they all have the same pirate ship models. Plus id rather the pirates for every race resemble a scrapped together, rundown version of their shipset than what they are now, and really that's how it should have been to begin with..

This is killing immersion for me so it must be dealt with! lol
 
pirates historically were navy that went rogue, so you could actually have an event where a ship or whole small fleet joins the pirate country. I'm fairly sure you could make race/country specific pirates. For greater immersion, they should offer if you pay them they won't smash your stations, and instead they end up guarding that system and "taxing" production there. Doesn't seem like fighting to the death to blow stuff up would be a profitable endeavor, unless they are privateers hired by an enemy empire.
 
It should be as simple as editing the pirate_events file to copy the graphical culture of the species of spawns after. You'd have to add in the designs to the graphical cultures before that though.
