Summary:

The game loads to the menu screen, but at that point becomes extremely laggy. Buttons highlight, but won't click 9 times out of ten. On the occasion the game does get through to the character selection screen, selecting a character leaves the play button greyed out, with the message that a character must be selected.

Game Version:

3.0.1.1 (ONDO)

Expansions:

Holy Fury
Jade Dragon
Monks & Mystics
The Reaper's Due
Conclave
Horse Lords
Way of Life
Charlemagne
Rajas of India
Sons of Abraham
The Old Gods
The Republic
Legacy of Rome
The Sword of Islam

Explanation:

The game loads fine to the CK2 menu screen. At that point it becomes extremely laggy. Buttons can't be clicked, and on the occasions they can, getting to the Character selection screen and selecting a character still leaves the play button greyed out, and the character must be selected message to be displayed.

I have deleted all mods, uninstalled the game from steam, manually uninstalled all CK2 files from the documents and steam folders. I have then reinstalled the game, verified the integrity of the game cache, and added ck2.exe to the windows defender exceptions list. The issue is still happening.

The laptop is a new one, bought in October 2018. Prior to christmas CK2 was running fine, now it is not. McAffee was installed on the laptop, but I have removed that after the new year using the uninstall program on the control panel.

Steps to reproduce:

Open steam
Run CK2
Navigate to menu screen

I'd recommend to attach a directX report.
DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

and while you are at it, these too (well it won't hurt):
Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

Just the tech support standard requests in certain cases and i presume that's one of those.
Woud make it easier and quicker for tech support.

Dear Aardvark Bellay,

Thanks for your suggestions, I've attached them here. There appears to be no system.log in the Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs folder though.

I'd guess the game runs on the MS Basic Display driver instead of the Gtx 1050 and thus the issues.
Good luck.

Dear Aardvark Bellay,

Thanks! That worked. I had to go into the ck2.exe file and take it off 800x600 resolution, but now its working fine. Thank you for you help!

Not exactly sure what you did there, but my pleasure. :)
