I use, without any issues at all, HOI2 on my main pc at home. Recently I bought a laptop VAIO VGN-A with Windows XP sp2 on it (kept up to date).

Installed the game without glitch. I launch the game, after the intro, it crashes every time while the apparent message is init sounds. I d/l'ed the 1.3 poatch but nothing changed.

As It was very likelky this is a driver issue, I checked all drivers for my laptop. Even with a minor update, the game crashes each and every time on load. Has anyone else met who the same issie can help me?.

Cheers,
B

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

Did all that, or I wouldn't bothered posting for request here ;) .

The debug text file points out to a sound driver issue. Problem is there is only one audio driver released for this laptop, I'll reinstall it again and see if something changes.

But what really baffle me is, I've reinstalled HOI, and core 0.91, in the meanwhile. Game launches without trouble. As sounds are almost the same, if not exactly the same, between both games, I don't see where the problem might be.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

Nice tool!, I've learned something today.

Here are the results (part 1, results are too long)

Here are the results (part 1, results are too long)

That is why the instructions said "From the start to the heading that says “DirectX components" " Since I do not need all that info.

Also It apears you did not follow all the standard Advice I gave you.
Specifically Number 3 and 6.
Your color depth is still set at 32 bit and your video driver is way out of date.
Please corect those things as well as continue with the other things mentioned such as the AVI folder rename ...
Then report back with a status report please.

I tried to set the colour at 16, without change, so I set it back at proper level. Same for AVI_back and other items you mentionned first. Those were without result so everything back.

As for driver's date, I've said in the very first post that this was the latest available, I really did my homework before posting here.

Problem solved

My humblest apologies for I've just found out what created the problem and ..well, the fault is mine, I should have removed the firmware instead of shutrting it down, as per advice 4.

Problem : game crashes down when loading sound.

I don' have ICQ, any instant messenger etc programs loaded on tray, only the original firmwares. So I did only removed those who aren't obviously handy (like ATI control). One of those firmware, sonic stage (latest version uploaded), has an on/off position. So for the first test I turned it off. But it still preempt ressources, so game crashes when initializing sound.

To get the game launched without issues, one has to turn it off completly, removing it from the tray. Which means that for other features to work, I have to close/open back the session, but at least it works.

Now why this appears only for HOI 2 and not HOI 1, no idea. I'll do some testing with Doomdsay once I have it.

Thank and sorry for the bother.

Good news.

And BTW, no way is this driver the latest.
"Driver Date/Size: 4/5/2005 21:59:06, 225792 bytes"
That driver is a year old, and new drivers come out a minimum of every two months.

I don't know exactly what Sonic Stage is or does, but the obvious conclusion here is that it is not programmed in a nice way. Every programmer knows that sound (just like a comm port, mouse, keyboard or full screen video) is a system wide shared resource. And as soon as you permanently acquire and hold on to that resource (even if you do not need it, for example in your "off" position), you effectively lockout all other applications.

Although I grant you that the handling of the inavailability of the sound device could be handled a bit better in hoi 2, ultimately it's not hoi 2's fault. You should contact the makers of Sonic Stage. Perhaps they have a newer version available that plays nicer in the multi tasking environment that Windows is nowadays. ;)

Maybe your version of Sonic Stage has only been tested with advanced sound cards like a Creative Labs soundblaster, which allow for multiple channels to be assigned to different applications concurrently. In which case your problem would not have shown up.

I must insist, this driver is the latest one, just look here if you do not believe me.

Yes, this is piss poor programming. What put me off was the fact, HOI 1, by any means older was working well.

Anyway, add one more laptop to the watchlist

Well, hoi 2, just as it's predecessor, uses sound through DirectX. And since Hoi1, DirectX has undergone an upgrade from 8.1 to 9.0

I would not exclude the possibility that the DirectX 9 protocols initialize and use sound resources differently than the DirectX 8.x protocols. That alone may account for the difference. ;)

Yes, I know you have DX 9 installed when using either of these games, but hoi 1 has been compiled and linked with DX 8 libraries, and thus uses a different section of DX 9 as hoi 2 does.

Well I never said get it from the Laptop Manufactor. ;)
Go to ATi or if that does not work get a third party one.
