It used to be that I installed Steam and CK2 in the Linux Mint partition of a laptop that double booted LM and Windows 8.1. The game constantly crashed on Linux Mint, however the Windows partition went fine, so I cut my losses by playing in the Windows partition.

The problem is that currently I'm using a different laptop with Elementary OS installed (with no Windows partition) and the game still crashes. I installed Steam and CK2 from my account. The game loads fine, but at some point the image freezes, although sound and music still run, and the gauntlet pointer moves when I move the mouse around.

The only solution is to Kill Process.

.. at some point the image freezes, although sound and music still run,...

That reminds me when on Windows the game sometimes, usually after a new patch, froze or rather the screen froze, but the game still
loaded in the background (harddisk actively reading). As long as music was still playing i just had to wait longer.
Not touching the mouse or keyboard the game proceeded to load into the main menu and no issue next time.
Windows occasionaly gave a warning about the game not responding, but i completely ignored that.
I don't know why that happened, but being ignorant was bliss.:D
Maybe this is a similar case, maybe not..

So what i'm saying, try letting it run for another thirty seconds or a even a minute.
If it remains frozen, then....my post was useless, but i thought to inform you anyway.

FYI the only supported distros are Ubuntu and SteamOS.

Is there anything in the system logs about the crashes?

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

Also in Steam please click on Steam-Help-System Info, and paste everything there into a text file and attach that here.

I'm a linux user, and giving it a minute to work itself out often works for me. BUT, there is also usually a genuine hard freeze (w/ ~2 seconds of audio looping, which can be hard to distinguish from normal sound with some of the music) coming very shortly after that so generally save to a fresh file and quit/restart immediately is the best practice if it comes back alive for you.
