I tried to imprison the Duke of Albany. He rebelled.

During that war one of his counts started a war to depose him.

He surrendered to the count therefor a new Duke of Albany took over.

As we had been fighting the new Duke of Albany was now an independent duke and not at war with me.

So...I just lost that duchy. I think I have a claim on it but my levies are up fighting another fight so I can't really check. Either way that's just wrong.

No it's not wrong... it's called sneaky. And I respect that Count! He played like a human would have in that situation to swipe a duchy! Good lad!

False. It was a countess that rebelled and she got nothing. When the old Duke was deposed some random guy got the title. He's in no way related to the countess. Not the same dynasty, no marriages, nothing. This new duke is just some guy.

I think the problem here is that the Independent flag on the Duchy is set as soon as the rebellion begins and this allows the OP's scenario to take place.

I think that there should be some sort of halfway house with independence where the Duchy has an "In Rebellion" status which survives a change of Duke but still leaves the old King at war for the rebellious Duchy. If the new Duke wants to he can pledge his loyalty to the King and the independence war will end or he can continue the fight for independence.

Either way, he should not suddenly become independent just because he has beaten the rebellious Duke before the King has been able to bring his forces into the battle.

This is indeed WAD. It's an annoying situation yes, but at least you should have a claim on the duchy so the new ruler isn't really out of the woods just yet!

It seems to be a bad case of bad luck to be frank, and as much as I feel for you I can't pass it on and classify it as a bug.

Whilst accepting that this is WAD and so cannot be logged as a bug, do you keep a separate log of issues where users have queried whether the design is correct? The reason I ask is that there are issues with Crusades ending prematurely for a similar reason and so if the code needs to be changed to address that concern it may allow you to have another look at the design here.
