I searched the forums but found nothing about this.

Which file is used to store the message settings (from MENU->OPTIONS->MESSAGE SETTINGS)? I want to reinstall EU2 - which resets the message settings to default.

Which file(s) should I backup?

I really haven't the faintest idea....probably the config.eu file which you can't/shouldn't edit. I'm afraid that you'll have to do it the normal way by starting a game and, before unpausing, go to options-->message settings and change it from there.

I think it is in your save game file, the one ending by .eug.cfg.

backup that file and rename it to the name of your newest game and you should have all your settings.

I think at least... :)

Heh heh...hate to disagree with you but the message settings (and difficulty level, agression level, etc.) are carried over as new defaults when you start a new game so I assume it must be stored somewhere else.

I was just playing a game this morning and the only thing I changed was a couple message settings (got into some heavy colonisation so I turned on the autopause for a few). I just checked my config.eu file and it shows that it was updated when I exited the game so I assume that the changes are applied there somehow. :)

I checked and it looks like config.eu is updated every time you play the game, regardless of whether or not you make changes to the message settings.

I'll just backup the whole thing. If I find which file it is, I'll post it.

After performing a few tests because I was curious I think viper37 and I are probably both right. :)

When loading a save game EU2 seems to adjust the message settings, etc. from the save .eug.cfg file you're loading, but when starting a new game it apparently pulls them from the most recent config.eu

that would make sense :)
thanks for making the tests T :)

so, if you start a new game, save it and then copy over your eug.cfg file, you should get all your previous message settings? :)

I made backups of config.eu and the Save Game folder. After reinstalling, patching and copying the backup files over the default ones I ran the game and yes, my old message settings are there. Mission accomplished.

Thanks MrT and viper37. :)

I haven't tried copying and renaming a sav game .eug.cfg to attach it to a different save game file...could produce some weird results since it would presumably pick up other in-game data. I notice that the save file remembers the last screen view (i.e. if you saved while in political map mode then it will load the game in political map mode too), difficulty settings, message settings, game speed settings, etc. I would think that it might work...

There's probably a ton of redundancy between the .eug.cfg and .eu files but it's not something I'd go out of my way to mess with until I was sure it wouldn't cause some other issues...for instance any hard-coded flags that have been set (if you copied over a save after the ToT then presumably it would flag it as enabled for any new games you started using that eug). Probably safer to spend a couple minutes at the beginning of a game to make the adjustments. ;)

Just saw your post...

Glad it worked. Let us know if anything weird happends during the game. It's possible that the .eu file has some slight changes after patching but if you're reinstalling to the same patch as before then you should probably be fine.
