I've picked up a used copy of Europa Universalis I (CD and manual) and am attempting to play it on a very minimal old computer. Is there any known incompatibility between EU and Cyrix MediaGX chips?

The reason I ask is that I have a Cyrix 200MHz chip with 64mb ram (matches the minimum requirements in the manual) yet the game dumps me back to the desktop as soon as I attempt to start a scenario.

Also, how do you disable the music? I like it but to save system resources I'd prefer to play without it if possible.

What OS and version of DirectX is that old system running? I think it might be possible to play EU, but it's a bit of a crap shoot...mostly determined by whether you can get it to run most of the 2000-period apps.

Music can be disabled by running the configuration program in the root directory. Just run the EU_Settings.exe file and switch it to the music off setting.

Is there an AVI folder in EU1?
If so rename it to AVI_Back.

I'm running Win95 and DirectX 7.0.something. EU found 7.0.0 on my system and I let it install a slightly later version.

can you tell us exactly what version of Win95 you have?
(go to Control Panel, System - it says "Microsoft Windows 95 [...]" with a version number 4.xxx something... ).
Make sure you have the most important patches for your system:
On this page, you'll find 395 updates for your OS :D

I'll post the links to the ones I think you need:

There is no EU_Settings.exe file anywhere on my hard drive after installing EU.

there is no EU_settings.exe for EU1. You need to edit your EU1 shortcut (right-click on it and select "properties") and add a paramater at the end... I think it is "nomusic" but I can't remember exactly :(

Win 94 4.00.950a (was .950b before I ran the various installers from the Microsoft download site)

After installing these the result is no different. It gets to Initializing Provinces and then quits to the desktop.

it shouldn't regress....

anyway, I'm quite sure this has happenned before... a long time ago in a galaxy... err, no, just a long time ago here :D

I'll need to check trough the archives... the solution would be between may 2001 and winter 2002... Of course, if a willing soul would be so kind as to search in my place... (hey T? :D )

Oh...well if it's only a thousand threads or so , I'll have a look. :p

More seriously, I will go back through the archives and see what I can unearth. I've got a few very busy days coming up so I'll try to do it ASAP but you might have to wait until Saturday.
