I started a game as a one province irish count, and built up to a 4 province duke loyal to Scotland. Scotland went to war against Munster, which had claims on 3 of my provinces, and agreed to a Scottish mobilization request. I had no reason to worry, because I could have beaten Munster on my own, and of course Scotland was huge. But rather than fighting, AI Scotland froze and just stood there while Munster took all my provinces (making me a 1 province country again), and then landed troops in Scotland and actually occupied 3 Scottish provinces.

So that pretty much ruined my game. My question is, what would have happened if I said no to the mobilization request? Alternatively, could I have avoided giving Scotland control of my army by mobilizing all of my provinces, then saying yes?

Then the king of Scotland would have gotten claims on all your titles but you would have been able to defeat Munster yourself.

Yes

Yes

Thanks, so basically if I was to end up in the same situation I should mobilize on my own and then agree (an awake Scotland would have destroyed me, so it would be bad to give them claims on my titles).

An unrelated question I have is how do I declare independence from a liege? I wasn't quite ready, but I was getting closer to being able to break with Scotland. However, I didn't see an option anywhere to do so. I wasn't allowed to declare war on Scotland, which seemed the easiest method.

There is no in-game option to declare your independence. But you can gain independence by

1. Declare war on your liege. You need a claim on one of his titles to do this

2. When you have low loyalty (<20% IIRC) an event may fire that either gives you the option to leave the realm peacefully or forcefully (=start a civil war). But since this is an event, it will not fire everytim your loyalty is below 20%.

3. Another option to gain independence is to become a king yourself.

Thanks yet again.

As a follow up, if I declare myself king, does that mean I separate peacefully, or must a war be fought?

If you declare yourself king, there will not be any wars because of it with the former liege.

And if I can declare myself king, couldn't the liege do so as well?

Yep, so you have to raise the funds swiftly!

I remember a game as a croatian count, where I captured most territories belonging to Serbia. When I had the cash to declare myself King, the title was not creatable (my liege, Croatia was king of Croatia and Serbia).

Like Galuska said, yes he can, so save up the money beforehand or right after you declare yourself King (of Ireland in this case). Often the AI just sits on potentially creatable titles, and lets them lie dormant, but sometimes it does do it.

However, if the King of Scotland does declare himself King of Ireland thanks to having a massively powerful vassal (you) there, since you control 2/3rds of the King of Ireland title, you can usurp a claim to it from Scotland (much cheaper prestigewise than grabbing, less or no BB, I never remember which). Then, once you have a claim to the King title, you can go war with Scotland over who's really the King of Ireland, you who conquered it with minimal aid from them, or them, who nearly lost it all by sitting on their hands during the recent war. Just siege the Scottish King's demesne (all of it) fast, and take the kingdom for your own.
