In a few AARs, it's been noted that the same names keep popping up over and over again for different characters. Part of the reason for this is that the file character_names.csv has too few names for some cultures. So, I'm starting an effort to collect additional names for the under-represented cultures - the more names the AI has to choose from, the less often it will pick the same ones.

What I'd like is for people to research and suggest names for inclusion in an expanded character_names.csv file. It would be very helpful if you would list your suggestions in the format of the character_names file, which is: culture;gender;name - hopefully it's obvious what each field means. Ideally, the names will be those that were used by actual nobles in the cultures in question. I'd like to get to the point where we have at least 25 names for both men and women for every culture.

So, post your suggestions in this thread, and I'll collect them.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Some statistics follow on the number of names for each gender in the existing character_names.csv file. I've sorted it so that the cultures most in need of attention are at the top. (Latin is at the bottom because, apparantly, it is only used for the names of popes - hence the lack of Latin female names.)

I am not sure how to respond to the fact there are presently more Pecheneg names than English names. Either I should be astounded at the difficulty of finding names for a culture which presently exists or astounded that they found so many names for a culture which is long dead. What is a Pecheneg name anyway? :D

Popes don't seem to have special names, though. So is there a chance the Latin names might be implemented for people who are elected Pope?

The Latin names were indeed supposed to be Papal names. All of them are names used by Popes during the period...

BTW, the "Norman" name group was supposed to be used only for the Italian Normans, and not for the French/English ones. Those should be have Frankish or English names instead. Hopefully we can get that working correctly here soon. The reason I bring this up is that I'm hoping people don't start listing "Norman" names thinking they should be used for England or Normandy...

But in any case, please do help out here! In some places, especially for those poor Georgian women, we really need some additional names in order to round out the lists! :)

Stickied...

There are medieval or actual names ?

An important question is (and not just for this example, but for all such suggestions) - which ones are names commonly used in the CK period? That's important in order to keep the verisimilitude of running a noble dynasty during the Middle Ages. So when it comes to suggesting names, please do your best to list medieval names...

You could mail the author of that page and ask for help if you are motivated enough. I am not.

One good place to comb through for names would be the Genealogy.eu site. No Georgians, alas, but lots of info on the noble houses of Europe back to the time of Charlemagne. I'm going to start working on parts of this site tonight, but since it's very big, I wouldn't mind at all if someone else tackled part of it.

Norman names

Some additional Norman names from the House of Hauteville:

norman;female;Amburga
norman;female;Clenenza
norman;female;Elise
norman;female;Felicia
norman;female;Fredesende
norman;female;Flandina
norman;female;Grateria
norman;female;Heria
norman;female;Isabella
norman;female;Marie
norman;female;Medania
norman;female;Umfreda
norman;female;Valdrade
norman;female;Violante

norman;male;Alessandro
norman;male;Godfrey
norman;male;Silvester

Some of the names seem more "Italian", being used after the Hautevilles had been in Italy for a couple of generations. But all of them were used by the Hautevilles, and since this is supposed to be for the Italian Normans, perhaps that's acceptable.

Sorry Elias, I wasn't trying to take anything away from you. I honestly didn't know that you were working on it already; there's no announcement that I've seen in the CK forum. If you'd like to combine our efforts with yours so that we're not duplicating work, I'd be happy to work with you. Though I took a look at your forum, and I'm afraid my German is not too great, so I can't follow all of the conversation that your group has held.
