I was recently wanting to install a mod (AGC beta 2, to be exact), but wanted a clean installation to work with. So I uninstalled EU2 1.05 and was going to start over. My CD had other ideas, though. I can't get past 16% installed. I've tried several times now and it always gets to 16% and locks up. According to the setup box, it gets stuck on some mission bitmap file. I looked at the CD and it looks like it's been well used (I've been playing the game pretty much non-stop since I got it several months ago), so that's probably the problem.

So, my question is, has anyone tried any of those CD doctor things or anything like them? Do they work? Or could I possibly get a replacement copy if, like, I send them my non-working copy or something?

This really sucks.

This is most likely an issue where your previous version of EU2 was not completely removed when you did the uninstall. Please refer to this thread for complete instructions/recommendations as to how to remove the previous install and then try again.

If you're still having problems after that, please post a new thread in the EU2 Support forum along with your system configuration, game version (Ubi, Strategy First, etc.) and I'll see what I can do to help you out. :)

No problem. It's far less likely (although not impossible) that the CD is at fault.

I'll ask C-Rex to move this thread over to the Support forum so if you're still having problems then just post the info back here rather than starting a new thread.

Good luck. :)

Well, I've completely wiped any trace of EU2 from my hard drive (I had two different installs to run different mods), but still no luck. It still gets to 16% and quits. Just before my latest uninstall, I was playing with the CD with no problems, so I can't imagine the CD is bad. I'm trying a defragmentation right now, so maybe that'll help.

Does your CD have any marks(fingerprints) smudges or scratches on the metalic looking side of it?

If it has smudges try some glass cleaner(like windex) on it and a clean soft cloth.

If it has noticable scratches it may be FUBAR.

I have a possible idea for another solution if that doesn't work but I need to check whether it will work for your version. Could you please let me know what country version of the game you have (e.g. Strategy First...).

I'm using the NA version, Strategy First.

Well, I scanned the hard drive and there were errors, so I fixed them and did a defragmentation, but that didn't seem to fix it. I tried installing again, but it came up to 16% again and stopped. Then it said something about checking the installing file, it may be corrupt, etc.

Oh, and there's a bunch of little scuffs on the CD, like any other well used CD. I wiped it all down to get rid of any dust or smudges. I don't think that was it, though, because the game was working fine before I uninstalled it, and, having the NA version, it runs off the CD. Unless, of course, it just needs the CD for boot up, in which case if that one part of the CD was ok, the rest could be jacked and I would never know (until I tried re-installing again, that is).

This sucks :(

I'm not sure if this will work but...

...could you try doing something for me then.

Use Windows Explorer to copy the entire CD over to a folder on your hard drive. If you have a coopered disk then it should give you an error message during this process. If it copies over successfully, next try installing it by running the install program from the folder on your hard drive instead. I think that you'll still need the CD in the drive, but that it might pull the files from your hard drive instead of the disk. *crosses fingers*

I should point out that I haven't tried this personally so I'm not sure if it will work or not. It's worth trying though.

Nope, didn't work. It hung up transferring files onto my hard drive. It's gotta be the CD.

you can try two things:
one, buy the CD again. It may be sold on EBay for a moderate price.
or two, copy the CD if you have a burner, or know somebody with a burner. If it can read the files (some software read better than others) and copy them, install with your copy and when you want to run the game, insert your original CD and it should start.

if no software can read the CD-ROM, only option #1 remains :(

Looks like that's my only options right now. I have a buddy that plays EU2 also, and I know he backs up most of his games. Don't know if he ever backed up EU2, but I know he has it, so I'll ask him. I kind of didn't want to go that route if I didn't have to because of the stigma attached to burned games, legitimate or not, but I'm also poor enough (working my way through school, ya know) that I have a financial concern about paying twice for a game. Not that EU2 isn't worth twice as much as any other game, but I don't have an extra $20-$30 or whatever laying around for a game I already bought once.

Hm, that was a kind of long and wandering post. Sorry about that, it's late.

Borrow his disk and install the game, then see if it will run with your disk in the drive.

Excellent suggestion Castellon!

In my opinion you are not doing anything illegal since you have purchased a legal copy from the publisher and you are not attempting to circumvent their copy protection. Installing from a friend's CD (or burning a copy of it) and then using your own legal CD in your drive when you play is completely reasonable.

Does your CD install on *his* machine?

If you get it installed then next time do not uninstall to use the Mod.

Instead just copy the EU Folder and rename it.
You now have two copies of the game.
Now apply the Mod (and patch) to the 2nd copy.
You now have One original copy and one that has been modded.
Always keep the original in its "virgin" condition so that you can always make a fresh copy to use any other mods with :)

Ok, now I'm really confused. I took a trip to my buddy's place and burned a copy from my CD and tried installing off that. It got past 16%, but hung on 21%. Same deal, just locked up with the "corrupt installation file" message.

The 16% file that hangs is GFX\interface\iw_military.bmp

The 21% file that hangs is GFX\Eyr\eyr_btn_military.bmp

WTF?!? I tried installing off my backup and, after it locks up, quitting and trying to install off my original, thinking that, since my backup gets past the 16% point, the files will already be installed, so when I tried with my CD, it would see that particular file has already been installed, so move on past the 21% file. No luck, even installing into the same folder, both cd's hang at the same points every time.

I haven't tried installing off either CD onto his hard drive. Unfortunately, he doesn't know where his original is and never made a backup of it, so all we have to work with is my own original and backup.

My question is, why would it be hanging up on different files, but both files are in the same directory, both are .bmp files, and both are military files? Coincidence? If it was the CD, wouldn't the backup I made be hanging up in the same place? This just gets curioser and curioser.

I would imagine that the copy process "thought" it was making the copy correctly but that one of the packed files was wrong - roughly at the same general location as the previous disk surface error. The files needed to run the game are all contined in about 5 compressed files so if one is faulty it could hang anywhere during its unpacking. Presumably your friend's CD burner managed to read through the first surface problem but encountered another that it couldn't read. I've had similar sorts of things happen trying to play music CDs with surface flaws. It'll skip around in roughly the same general area but not always exactly the identical spot.

I really hate to say it but it's sounding very much like you'll have to ask for a new copy for Christmas or start saving your pocket change. :(

Try contacting the publisher and see if they will exchange CDs for you. You can find the links in the support options thread at the top of the forum.

Well, I solved the problem. I was able to find a ripped version on the internet and installed it. It runs fine off my original CD still, so problem solved. I'm keeping the original ripped file in reserve in case I ever need to go through this again.

Thanks, everyone, for your help and suggestions. I'm just glad I can play EU again :)
