I will name my son Lucifer and let him control the papacy and perhaps some of the orders.

Muuuahahahahaa :)

Well, the way HOI does unit names is quite like that - it supplies "default" names from a text file, and you can click on the names an edit them from within the game. Personally, I'm hoping this is how family members work in CK.

This way you can tinker if you want, or completely ignore the names if you like.

Or possiby the game presents a list of names to you, and you choose from it.

Perhaps, but if you do it that way there will be annoying popups (to the people who really don't care). And limits on flexibility (what if the name I want isn't one of the choices?)

Well, EU was ever very good at allowing you to customise message options. It could be the same here. Three levels of choice, say, fully automated, chosen from a list or individually named by the player.

It'd be so great if you could name your own, a long line of Josquius'....
Could be a problem on multi player with idiots calling their kids GOKU 2 but then again I doubt you'll find much of that kind of idiot on games like this....
Wait is there even a multi player...

What I've recently started to feel is that it's not much point worrying about whether we're "responsible" enough to name our heirs properly. Heck, if we want to name our heirs Shithead in our own private games, we should be able to (though most people won't, I'm sure).

I SO DESPERATELY want to be able to name my children and create my own unique dynasty.

Then make it an option to prompt for new names or not. IMO, when a child is born you should be prompted with a little text box already filled with a name taken from the database, and you get the option to change it or just click ok. Otherwise, if you select not to be prompted about it, the computer just choose a name from the database. Everybody will be happy :)

Ah, the perfect solution...

Is Sergei reading this?

I still think the best solution would be to handle it exactly the way HOI does unit names - no popups, and you can text-edit them whenever you like, if you like. Or not.

One additional argument in favor of this - some rulers "ruled" under a different "official name" than they had growing up. (Especially, a few of those French King Louises). This way, it could be changed when they came to power.

Also, we could add, delete, or change sobriquets, such as changing "William of Normandy" to "William the Conqueror", or something....

I would also like to see default names generate incase you didnt care to bother naming each child, with the added aspect of giving you the chance to name the child. So both roads work best :)
