I am playing Spain in the GC. I expected the provinces in and around Flanders/Holland to rebel. And they finally did after Jean Calvin. I have fought rebellions there for over 20 years. When do they end??? I finally switched to counter-reform but I cannot change the religion of the rebellious provinces.

I have one leader on the scene, Farnese. He has crushed at least one dozen rebellions in Flanders alone and he and my other armies have crushed more than a dozen in the other provinces. Many times he has had to abort sieges in The Hague or Holland because he has to go back to Flanders and crush a new one. I don't dare have small armies as they get wiped out if they are stationed where a rebellion breaks out. This Dutch nationalism is insane.

I have just decided to abandon those provinces and retreat to Artois and Hainaut. It is costing too much treasure to fight the damn rebels. If I allow the Dutch to become independent, can I then crush them and force conversion?

Yes I beleive you can crush them then...but the wise move is simply ignore the rebellions, they will first go away when they have formed the Netherlands.... And usually it isn't worth fighting there for the Spanish....

It's so easy to get sucked into the same mistake the Spanish actually made--fighting for the Low Countries. I mean, 30+ rebellions in 20 years. God. I have lost thousands upon thousands of troops and spent literally 350+ gold each year crushing these guys. Sometimes over 400 ducats. So far, I have resisted taking out loans and have been able to do very minor upgrades to colonies.

But the rebellions are really draining me.

Does Dutch Nationalism ever go away???

Keep Flanders and the province right next to it (forgot the name). Let the rebels have the others. The ones you decide to keep will still rebel, but holding two provinces is easier than holding five.

Upon the Edict of Tolerance, Dutch Nationalism will go away (at least it did for my game). Using that strategy, I was able to keep The Netherlands from forming.

The Edict of Tolerance is currently at 3% (I think) so I'm looking at maybe 20+ years of more rebellions. I'm exhausted just thinking about it.

BTW the province next to Flanders is Zeeland. I should know, having crushed at least 10 rebellions there as well.

Dutch Nationalism

This is experience with trying to stop the dutch rebellions

Initially I was not able to stop their rebellions, only holding on to 2 of the rebelling provinces..Flanders and Artois I think....The Netherlands formed....then I promptly annexed the nation of Netherlands back into the Spanish fold. Then all the provinces continued rebelling for what seems like forever...I have easily spent over 5000+ gold on trying to put down rebellions.....I looked under province information, and found that the affected provinces had a +33% per month of rebelling due to Dutch Nationalism !..whew...realizing that It was not worth it to hold onto these territories I pulled all my troops out and let the provinces stay under the control fo the rebel scum...now it is like 5 years later, and the provinces will not form their own nation yet...they are stil under rebel control, but no Netherlands popping up...???..weird

Any ideas, and when does Dutch NAtionalism (+33%) go away if ever?

The way to handle it IMO is to let the rebel and form Holland. In the ensuing war u send in ur troops and conquer everything bar their capital. U have lost one province but the Dutch Nationalism in the other provinces will be gone as long as Holland exists..
